delayed plg registration

Although not directly related to Mercedes I thought I would ask the question anyway:-

I am a farmer and am about to buy a another large quad bike (Can Am 800). This bike comes with a road legal kit as standard, which included indicators and brake lights etc.

The thing is I do not wish to use it on the road, is it possible I could register it with the dvla later on this year on a 60 plate for example. I have no real reason for doing this except for saving on road tax and making the vehicle potentially worth more when I sell it even though the date of manufacterer would be stamped on the chassis.

The dealer is a real pain (not unlike the Merc dealer I dealt with!). He says it is a legal requirement to register vehicles asap after they are sold. However I dispute this since I can find nothing in writing to say this. In the past I have bought combine harvesters and delayed registration (due to laziness in filling out paperwork) for quite a few months. From memory the plate issued was current at the time of registration, not backdated to DOP.

Is there anything from stopping me doing this legally? I remember on here someone saying they spotted a Lamborghini that was definitely quite a few yrs old on a '10 plate. However in this case the car had been garaged for the duration. This surely cannot be too different to what I want to do ??

Interesting question. I'm afraid I don't have any answer, except that the dealer's bonus may be tied to registrations rather than sales..

As it's a dual-purpose vehicle, perhaps they could supply the quad without the road legal kit and you could purchase that as an "upgrade" if you wanted to register it for road use later?

On the other hand, in these legislative days the dealer may be telling the truth. You can't buy a number plate in Halfords these days without giving a DNA sample, so the thought that the government would allow you to buy a whole functioning motor vehicle without them knowing about it has a certain amount of credibility..

Cheers,

Gaz
