Detailing advice needed before I get started

I think what Rory is asking is whether even with ceramic coating, it requires more than just waving a pressure washer at it (i.e. you need to crack out the bucket and mitt).
Pressure washer and towel is all that is used by my detailer...

You have not advised what coating your son had or who applied it and whether it was professionally detailed?

Mine was Gtechniq platinum crystal, selected it after seeing a before and after on a Bentley and Ferrari carried out by the detailer. I had a cheaper Supaguard applied by a dealership on my Range Rover and it was a total waste of money.

I guess it depends on what we want from a car.

I want my Sl to grow old with me.

My son wants his E53 AMG to be reliable and will dump it once it is 3 years old....

Different folks ...different strokes (and wash time.....)

No sure what brand but was done by a pro - He usually doesn't stint so I assume it was a decent product.

Many many thanks to all of you who contributed to my original questions. I now feel better educated! In wintertime especially, I find myself short of things to do and with too much time in which to do them. Luckily I have a large and well lit garage as well as some DIY skills so the detailing route could suit me. The SL is SORNed until next spring but my other cars could also benefit from anything that reduces the quantities of mud I collect on the lanes in my rural location. I might collect just as much but at least be able to get rid of it more easily. Thanks again for your contributions

My thinking is that ceramic is no different to the glass on my car and it gets dirty. Which, is why I've never bothered with ceramic.

I bet you have not had to use a 2 bucket system, wax and polish to keep your glass clean ;-).

My point is (ceramic) it is not any easier than keeping glass clean & you cannot clean your glass with a hose down and a towel. I don't buy it and think that a lot of people are trying to justify all the money spent on ceramic.

Well I have 3x cars to wash, 1x with Ceramic 2x without, the 1x with takes half the time to clean and after looks as if it has been both washed, waxed and polished. I can only report from actual experience.

I do not feel the need to justify anything to anyone, something that seems to happen when you get old, your earlier post seemed to ask me directly what I thought, I gave you my thoughts from experience but it is up to you to decide if you want to believe it.

Not saying you need to justify costs. However looking back would you spend the money again for easier cleaning?

Think I already said best decision I made, going to do this on all my black cars in future.
