Diesel Power

I watched the Tiff Needell vs Button race but never saw any spins by either driver. As far as I recall it was good fun, and very entertaining. The article was filmed shortly after Button had been caught speeding in a diesel BMW. The speed 130mph comes to mind but I cerainly will not argue if some one disagrees. Button did indeed win the race, but the front bumber of Tiff's diesel was practically joined to the rear bumper of Buttons car.

Supercharger's have indeed been fitted on diesel egines it was way back in the 50's 1960's on the Commer TS3 and what an impressive noise it was. Technology moves on and the 'Kompressor' is shortly due to be replaced by the turbo.

It is 'irresponsible' to compare my car to another car on the public highway :) :) Yesterday at the traffic lights this 9.8ltr super charged Jag tried to out accelerate me but boy I showed him. The road was quiet and we both went for it. Who would have thought a little child would run out from behind some bushes right in front of us!!!

I find the 320CDI a brilliant engine with plenty of power, likewise no doubt members that own the 320 petrol like their vehicles.

A number of Police Forces are now using the 320CDI as a traffic patrol vehicle. That choice is certainly not made because it is the cheapest option.

Isn't there a Golf Gti Diesel now competing in the Golf series?

Last time I checked we were averaging 36mpg, which we are extremely pleased with.

Interesting thread,

Regards,
John

Hertfordshire Police run several E320 CDI estates, they can load them up to the hilt and still hace loads of go left.

Is that a picture of Boycie from Only Fools and Horses ?

Just to balance the debate a little....

There's been a great deal of nonsense spoken about diesel performance lately... Yes they have oodles of low down torque, yes they are probably quicker in the real world. But BHP speaks volumes - whoever reckons that a 320CDI could murder a BMW 330Ci has never been up against someone who's really trying. Having road tested an E320CDI then gone straight back into my old 330ci, I can tell you, without a shadow of a doubt the 330 felt like a rocket ship once wound up. Diesels tend to have tons of "shove", but run out of breath early and hence suffer in the all important 0-100.

Anyone ever see the top gear episode where they pitted a 330d against a 330i?

just had one of them tonight from a standing start from traffic lights on to the motorway can not resist a beemer in the rear view mirror he must of felt he was in a rocket ship .(more like a dust cart really)after i past him and he was really trying hard just didnt have the grunt..

I remember from the 80's :o that Lancia developed a group B rally car which had a Supercharger and a Turbo.

The reason was explained that a petrol engine (especialy a performance one) produces little torque until "on the cam" and that the Supercharger overcomes this. Then as the RPM builds the Supercharger was switched off and the Turbo took over.

Brilliant when it worked, but unfortunatly it was a Lancia :D

Car was outlawed, along with all the group B cars when the governing body realised they could not have 800bhp (allegedly  ) rally cars flying through the stages of the world and tragicaly killing people.

Great time for inovative technology though.

There are supercharged diesels about...

320HP Supercharged Diesel Engines

As soon as I saw the lead article I knew they would be marinised. Just a word of caution for any one that might be tempted. There are a number of companies down here that import very nice boats from the US. Unfortunately we are now seeing boats from Florida that were insurance write offs following the hurricane season. Reading between the lines on this one it is possible that the boat was transformed into a submarine! ;) ;)

My old grey matter is also recalling Perkins P4 and P6's that were fitted onto the Hunter, Huntress and some Fairey boats, these to were supercharged. (not 100% sure but fairly sure)
