Digital camera advice

Just about fallen off my chair - Jessops and good price in the same sentence?

If you find it on the internet in UK cheaper, print out the page, take it to Jessops and they will price match - apparently.

In my experience they don't want to talk about price matching unless the competitor is a bricks and mortar style establishment who have shop fronts. They've always told me to bugger off when showing offers from mail order only companies....

Here's some proof of their robbery (given cameras mentioned in the thread):

Minolta Z1 @ Jessops : £229.90
Minolta Z1 @ Pixmania : £187.00

Fuji S5000 @ Jessops : £259.90
Fuji S5000 @ Pixmania : £206.00

Nikon 3200 @ Jessops : £199.90
Nikon 3200 @ Pixmania : £157.00

From memory all products from Pixmania also come with 2 years warranty even when the manufacturer offers only 1.

Oh, and a tip for anyone buying memory - try http://www.valueflash.co.uk :

128mb mmc - £24.78
128mb sd - £25.84
128mb memory stick - £33.48
128mb xd - £28.13

Pixmania is ok, but they are based in france so the mains lead will have a french plug and you don't always get the accessories you get in the UK. A friend of mine bought a Fuji camera from them and it didn't come with the cradle the UK model does.

Jessops will price match any UK based price, be it internet or bricks and mortar. What they will do however is phone the internet suppliers to see if they have the item in stock and ready for shipping - if they don't then there's no deal. If you get any grief from your local Jessops phone their head office :)

Hmm. I've bought quite a lot through them (along with 15-20 people I work with), and haven't had this hassle. It's probable though that what I bought was accessory packaged for global distro though. Never had a non UK plug delivered.

Thanks for advising andy. I haven't had a good run with Jessops on anything at all, digital, film or developing. I'll try again in the future though, given what you've mentioned.

A quick question. Having read some of the great tips and advice on this thread in response to SGCW124 original query, i have now been tempted to buy one myself the Nikon Coolpix 3100, which was highlighted in one of the comments above. Having read reviews on amazon and elsewhere, it does seem to be good value for money at £150 (with especially good battery life), only disadvantage is that it comes with only 16mb of storage.

I would be looking to buy extra memory with this camera, and the question i have is are SD (secure digital) memory card and CF (compact flash) memory card one and the same and they can both be used in this particular camera ?

No they are completely different types of storage card - different size too. This camera takes Type 1 Compact Flash, which is probably the best value memory money can buy.

Thanks scotth, for clarifying this..

I asked the same digital camera question myself last year. And after being bombarded with information & advise I bought the Sony DSCV1. Not the cheapest camera on the market but after a visit to my local Sony centre I was made an offer I could not refuse.

I have also recently bought the Sony DPP-EX5 Digital Photo Printer, all I now have to do is insert the memory card & connect the printer to a TV & print out amazing quality real photographs rather than just looking at the images on a screen.

www.digitaldepot.co.uk comes highly recommended from me.

If you are near Stevenage, then go into their shop (I think they have another one somewhere too....) - great guys - really know their stuff - best prices, and the only place in the UK with decent stock levels of what they advertise.

Got off my butt today, up to town and had a look at what's on offer and all the suggestions on this post.

Fantastic response- thanks guys! looks like may burst the budget a little as
I like the Dimage2 - thanks NormanB ....looks like no beer for me for next 7 days!

Anyway come Saturday I'm going to do battle with Tottenham Court Road and do some serious salesman badgering.

Steve

Last time I tried that I got told off by the salesman for going shop to shop. Apparently all the shops are owned by 3 Families, so not as easy to get a bargain as before. I'd choose a product then go to Jessops or search the web for the best deal.

Good luck anyway

Regards

Tan
