I asked a guy who works at mercedes, and he said its for when they need to do geometry alignment on the car. It seems to make more sense, mercedes dont really have a habit of doing a lot of things just for decoration.
I have to say that I prefer Fuzzers my self as I want a wheel that is "more hole than wheel" (well put Steve). The big Halford stores have some great deals on at the mo so I may end up with no MB ones in the end.

I can confirm this is the case. The genuine MB alignment jigs fit into the holes and clamp onto the tyre tread. This ensures that if the rim is buckled the alignment is still accurate.
