Does anyone remove the paint from new MB Brake Discs

Hi

Does anyone remove the paint from new brake discs with sandpaper before fitting or do you just let the pads do the work?

Thanks,

Sometimes when fitting pads it is necessary to file off the paint from the edges, otherwise the pads will be too tight and they will bind or stick, they should be a nice easy push fit

The grey protective lacquer will be removed during the first application of the brakes. You may briefly experience a bit of grating as its rubbed off. Probably a good idea to "run in" the discs by several brake applications on a quiet bit of road when maximum braking efficiency isn't critical .

Hi

Grober thanks, was just afraid in case it put some kind of glaze on the new pads but was fairly sure that MB wouldnt put something stupid on the discs that would require sanding off. Remember buying discs one other time not MB and the protective rust coating had to be removed with meths or something but it was like a smear of oil on them for rust protection and the meths/petrol idea would make sense and would defo need removed.
Just checking, i will let the pads do the work.

Thanks,

I always clean mine off with meths. But then I'm a bit sad and I spray the hub part with silver heat resistant paint at the same time. It make the wheels look better as you do not get the rusty ring between the wheel and the main hub.

Can you recommend a heat resistant paint?

Thanks

Having just fitted new rear discs I found the coating came off after the first use so no issue there.

As all my callipers were in a pretty poor state I have started the process of cleaning and painting them. Halfords have a range of heat resistant high temperature paint in various colours. The brush on stuff which I'm using gives an excellent finish.

The replacement discs for our SL500 (which it appears has the handed discs from the SL60 on it) had very specific instructions to skim off the coating on a lathe first.

No idea why...I had lathe access anyway so just chucked them on and gave it a quick run over.
