Does your AMG induce hatred on the road?

997 Turbo, SL55 AMG
I have noticed something about my SL55... people (non petrol heads) seem to dislike it.

Yes it's loud, but then so is my 911 turbo. My 911 is 2008 and I have had it since new, and my SL55 is 2003 and I've had it for a few months, so it's worth less than a new BMW 320d.

Yet I've had people swear at me, give me dirty looks, just generally get really angry at me on the road, sometimes when just moving along slowly in traffic minding my own business!

You may say it's my driving style, but I have had no issues in the 911 - people in fact move over - nothing in my recently sold 320d Msport, my former 535d etc.. and my driving style is very much the same.. in fact, I've calmed down as I've got older.

Is it AMG or is it the SL? Do people think it's a 'flash' car because it's a convertible?

Just wondered whether anyone else has experienced this, or whether I just look like a cnut :D

:D I wonder the same myself ;)

It's weird as I seem to get both extremes with the SL. When I had a Subaru everyone to a man hated me, when I had a Jag I have never been treated so courteously whereas the SL seems to engender love and hate in equal measures.

I don't get it really, I mean I don't openly laugh at drivers of diesels even though I'm laughing inside ;) :D

So it's not just me!

I get so many questions and compliments about the car, more in the 5 months I've had it than the years having the 911, but then the negative reactions are really extreme sometimes!

It's only jealousy !;)

Maybe it's the horrendously loud exhaust you describe on the other thread? :dk:

Exactly :thumb:

Did have a funny comment a week or so ago though. Parked up and got out of the car and a woman walking past stopped and looked over and just said 'Very nice'..... I jokingly asked her if she meant me or the car.... she looked almost mockingly and said 'the car, silly'' and walked off..... the b1tch :D :D

Its the SL I think. Most are owned by show offs and suspect sexuality men/women.

I am kidding.... I think its the perception of who they think you are etc.

Oh I thought you were serious, it's certainly why I bought mine sweetie ;) :D

good job I only have c class, e class and vito !!
I don't want to be mixed up with that kind of people!:D

I've never had any problems whatsoever from other road users with my previous eight AMG's; I've only ever owned two cabriolets (BMW E30 325i & MK I VW Golf GTi) in my time and both of them were cool cars which was reflected in some of the big grins I'd see once people clocked the cars.

Soft tops in general do seem to create a strange reaction with people, I have noticed that myself.

Surprised you don't get more earache about the 911 to be honest though, most drivers come across as being total bell-ends (and one of my friends owns one!)

I seem to attract the bell-end boys who like to tail gate but I imagine they are trying to read the model numbers although I don't have any but the Weistec emblem is very small so I can only assume they are trying to make that out :dk:

As for the OP, soft tops do tend to be owned by total knob-cheese's wearing a pink Lyle & Scott sweater so that's probably why the negative looks, especially seeing one with the roof down and it's totally overcast and even on some occasions.....raining

My take on it? Who gives a toss what others think, as long as you're happy :bannana:
