Does your AMG induce hatred on the road?

Why?

Tony.

Probably because they look so happy enjoying the sun. Kind of like a smile makes the other person feel good.

Im not sure I personally would enjoy the winter sun like some around my way. They drive about with hats, gloves and coats but with the hood down, I like the warm too much.

Anyway hope that helps you ;)

Just need to turn the heater up!

It's a convertible thing... Had an SLK when I was around 21 (finance and lots of it!) but I looked no more than 17, got nothing but abuse in that car!

Yet I've had people swear at me, give me dirty looks, just generally get really angry at me on the road, sometimes when just moving along slowly in traffic minding my own business!

Roof down, music on perhaps :dk:.

I think the typical MB/AMG demographic is changing.

It's getting a bit too 'try hard' these days, perhaps too much aspiration?

Do people think they've really achieved something by owning a newish MB or an AMG these days? And hence are looking out for people's reaction to this perceived status?

I don't really notice anyone's reaction to what I drive. And I've driven/ridden anything from old smokers to brand new.

I don't really care what others drive and I doubt many care what I do :o

I still appreciate nice cars though.

It's almost certainly an issue with your exhaust being ridiculously loud. You must have realised that this would draw unwanted attention?

As said an SL55 isn't a particularly posh car anyway, they're worth less than most rep mobiles these days. I like them and would buy one but wouldn't delude myself about my status by owning one and doubt it would attract much attention these days :)

I have noticed something about my SL55... people (non petrol heads) seem to dislike it.

Yes it's loud, but then so is my 911 turbo. My 911 is 2008 and I have had it since new, and my SL55 is 2003 and I've had it for a few months, so it's worth less than a new BMW 320d.

Yet I've had people swear at me, give me dirty looks, just generally get really angry at me on the road, sometimes when just moving along slowly in traffic minding my own business!

You may say it's my driving style, but I have had no issues in the 911 - people in fact move over - nothing in my recently sold 320d Msport, my former 535d etc.. and my driving style is very much the same.. in fact, I've calmed down as I've got older.

Is it AMG or is it the SL? Do people think it's a 'flash' car because it's a convertible?

Just wondered whether anyone else has experienced this, or whether I just look like a cnut :D

Maybe they are mistaking you for jeremy clarkson

It's odd the reactions cars get. Open top cars do make it easier to hear what others say, but hand gestures need no loudspeaker.

I have had no bad experiences in my Fiat and lots of smiles, ditto my Citroen SM. My Allard is almost the same but I have heard the occasional term of abuse, generally from white van men (older transits), but nothing more, although I did once get tailgate on an empty M25 for 3 miles in the inner lane, I put that down to introversion. In BMWs I got lots more abuse (and behaved worse), I can't recall anything from AMG days.

And 15 months ago when I bought mine I'd have agreed with you, but my car has attracted more attention (most of it positive) than any other car I have ever owned and I have owned some quite nice motors in my time.

I see SL55s on almost a daily basis, I'm not sure they stand out much more than many other modern cars?

I'd say a Pagoda would attract more attention than any R230 if I'm honest. The only thing special about an SL55 is the performance but the same engine is found in all manner of MBs of this era :o

Don't get me wrong, I really like them but not exactly a neck-snapping car.

Give anyone £15-20k and there's plenty of them for sale, not exact rare or hard to come by :)

I'll probably buy one soon :D

I never seem to get any negativity. I can't see how you can be jealous of an £8k 10 year old Merc anyway... :dk:

A few youngsters have "whoa"d when they've heard the noise but then I appreciated meaty cars when I was a similar age albeit not quite the same choice.

The other day in the petrol garage, chap leaned out of his pickup cab window examining the car whilst driving round it and looked at me and nodded appreciation.

The people who have real problems with AMGs are those who pretend to poke fun and not be bothered but many a true word said in jest!

:D

Did have a funny comment a week or so ago though. Parked up and got out of the car and a woman walking past stopped and looked over and just said 'Very nice'..... I jokingly asked her if she meant me or the car.... she looked almost mockingly and said 'the car, silly'' and walked off..... the b1tch :D :D

You should have retorted "thank god for that - I'll know I'm in trouble when I attract the appreciation of an old crone like you!".

I completely agree with you which why I have been surprised at the attention. As you say it's not even like they are that rare.

I didn't buy it to seek attention, I bought it because I have a small penis and my doctor recommended a V8 ... or something beginning with V anyway ;) :D

Is it AMG or is it the SL? Do people think it's a 'flash' car because it's a convertible?

The latter I think - a 2 seat convertible is generally viewed as an extravagance rather than a normal means of transport. The average person would have no idea what an AMG was, let alone whether a particular M-B was one or not.

oh willy you so boring!:)

To those who seem to think it's the loud exhaust, read my comments about it on the other thread.

FYI, I only got the car back with the exhaust today. It's had a primary cat and muffler delete before that - which I notice many of you guys with SL55s have too.

So do try to read my posts before criticising guys, you may not look quite so silly then.

The comments I have had have all been prior to today - most positive, but some rather negative, and some simply driving at a snails pace in traffic.

And those people accusing AMG owners of looking down on people with non AMG cars - chip on your shoulders chaps? Nobody suggested anything of the sort.

My comments were simply that I was surprised at how little attention and few comments I got in a 997 turbo vs. many in the SL55.

The SL55 is a weekend car which will get maybe 2-3k miles of use a year - I wanted to see how the exhaust sounded as it had a sodding huge hole in the rear box and needed fixing!

If it starts becoming annoying and/or embarrassing, I will simply swap it...

Besides, a lowered SL55 with black numberplates (go on, I'm sure some will have something to say) and 19" wheels is hardly subtle!

I can confidently say it's still a lot quieter than my cousins F458, both on startup and when driven!

^^ So you've got a blinged-up car with a barry numberplate and a rude boi exhaust and yet you are surprised by the negative response from a proportion of the complete strangers whose attention you have gone out of your away to attract.

I'm not sure that it's any of the posters here who are looking silly.
