Hi i need to disconnect the doors air bags due to doors being painted. Would it be straight forward as just disconnecting the air bag wire and would the air bags have to be re set your advise is valuable as i thort this is a very sensitive part dont want to do anything wrong what i shouldnt do

I disconnected the airbag on my steering wheel the other day.
From what I read the only safety point was to disconnect the car battery.
Once finished I reconnected the airbag then battery with no error messages.

Hi,
Just make sure the ignition isn,t switched on with the air bags disconnected, though with the amount of stripping down you are doing i would run a "STAR" quick test afterwards then the SRS warning light could be reset whilst it is plugged in.

Hi whats a star quick test?

STAR is the diagnostic software that MB and decent Indies use to assist in diagnosing faults it checks all systems on the car, a quick test does an overall test of all monitored control units throughout the car, it is far more comprehensive than any other diagnostic system, if the ignition is turned whilst the airbag is disconnected it will register a fault in the cars computer, this light will stay illuminated until its reset by STAR, If any of the units are disconnected and the ignition turned on it will log a fault in the computer. I normally have quick test done on my car once or twice a year just for peace of mind really, last time it told me that i had removed replaced my interior light cluster and A/C control unit though these logged faults won,t stop the car from being used, when you do get a fault and the codes are read there will be superflous codes stored that could confuse the diagnosis, and as i,m always playing about with mine i like to know that all codes are cleared every so often.

how much does it cost to have one done? and is the available at a local garage or profesional?

Hi,
If you ever go to one of the bigger meets there is normally someone who has a STAR there that would do it for you, a good STAR equipped Indy, and I dont think MB would charge much more than half an hour for this.
Regarding the charge I have never been charged specifically for it as mine has always been done at meets, or when my car has needed to be plugged in, ie when my climate control was recharged by Ollly it needed to be reset and he wanted to see if there was any error codes logged regarding it, he ran a short test on it and went through the whole thing for me with no additional charge, and taking time to explain the fault codes present and then cleared them all for me.
