On the way home on country lanes i came across two vehicles driving quite erratic, after a few minutes it was obvious the car in front of me was trying to get the car in front to stop due to it driving all over the shop, we then approached a roundabout & noticed the first car slowed down to walking pace and still managed to hit the kerb before taking the first exit, i should have taken the second exit but decided to follow these two cars as by then i made up my mind that the leading car was not fit to be on the road (only due to the way it was driven). Once i found the opportunity i over took both & noticed the car in front of me was two women & the leading car was a man on his own, i came to a safe stop, both cars stopped behind me, i got out the car & the girls got out too, i opened the mans door & straight away i could smell alcohol so took the keys out the ignition and in my pocket they went!, by then the girls in the other car were relieved as they were trying to stop him for 15 minutes!, i asked him if he was on any medication, or diabetic which he replied yes to both, i then asked where he lives to which he replied cornwall, bare in mind we were near Bromsgrove which is 240 miles away!, i then asked him if he'd had a drink..."only a couple" he replied which he then started to drink a pint of milk & lit a cigarette, by then i new he was speaking sh*t. The girls already called the police & were there 10 minutes later. The officer asked the man to get out to which he refused but then the officer said "you can get out the easy way or the hard way either way you're getting out", when he eventually got out i couldn't believe how paralytic he was, the officer had to hold him up to walk to the police car, part of me felt guilty for stopping the man but you never know it might of saved he's life or some one else's.

Would you have done the same or just took that second turning to go home & wonder what happened that night?

Very true, just hope the chap realises his mistake in the morning & doesn't curse me

How guilty would you feel if you heard on the news that a driver in the car you saw had killed himself that night?
Or killed someone else?

You did him a favour - well done and thank you.

I know it was the right thing to do I just wouldn't like to be in that position, I'll ask the officer how drunk he was when he comes for the statement later today.

Whilst I'm totally behind your actions you have to be careful and look out for your own safety. The car behind the drunk driver may have been friends who would have "interfered" with your actions. Too many knife wielding maniacs around these days. It's tough enough for trained police to have to deal with. If he'd have knifed you to death he'd have not been sent down for life or anywhere near as he "didn't know what he was doing".

I'm certainly not criticising your actions but we have to be very careful in these situations. All's well that ends well.

The wife wasn't amused when i overtook them as she thought he'd hit the side of our car thats how bad he was driving, i did take a look whilst overtaking them both, had i seen it was too much for me i would have called the police myself or followed them to a more public place.

Hats off to you -i would have just phoned 999 & given the cars details/location,you never know what can happen if you try to deal with it yourself(there ae a lot of lunatics out there).

Well done, a gallant action which has done us all a favour, him included probably.

On reflection, I wonder if the police would have responded if you had called them to report him while following, instead of stopping him, and given them location with regular updates. (Assuming you have hands free, or your wife had phoned them). It would be interesting to know, as you could only have suspected that he had been drinking, or was unwell.

Well done, you may have saved someones life without knowing it. As others have said, he deserves what's coming.

Update

Got a call from the bill asking to meet at our local station at 6pm with the other girls to give our statements, after giving the statement i asked how the driver was in the morning to which he replied "he's in denial but was three times over the limit" how stupid can one be? if he pleads not guilty i have to attend court just to say yes it was him driving!, if i was in his shoes id want to thank the person for possibly saving my life or even some one else's, but oh no they have to waste peoples time & money.....i hope they throw the book at him.

That's what I did when I saw some erratic driving on the A9 and M8.

Heroic thing to do but I'd be wary about accosting a member of the public in case I end up under the wheels of their car, or over the roof.

Well done! - You'll never know if you actually saved someone's life or not....
Best that way than knowing you could have saved someone's life......
