Driven: Mercedes e63 amg estate

AMG cars are like first class on an airline.

All the standard models E220cdi - E350cdi (the economy and premium economy class) they run the company. But those that have bundles to spend there's AMG (First class) and boy do they milk you.

£90K? That's a a lot of money for an estate E class, even one with a V8. That's twice as much as a nice spec E350cdi Sport Estate with Brabus mods- no slouch itself.

Doesn't stop me having a secret yearning for one, but £90K? Really?

For some the desirability comes from it's price tag.

looks great in indium grey

Look at it another way. It's as fast as a £90k Audi R8 or Maserati coupe but can take 2 more passengers and more luggage. In the case if the Maserati be much more reliable.

On that basis they are a complete bargain

I'm confused as to why have they called it an E63?

If it has a 5.5-litre in it shouldn't it should be an E55?

Surely 75k ? , whereas 90k is actually for a specced up one.

The one specced in the road test was £90K.

£75K for the "base model" then you add £2,450 for a LSD. Why is that even an option? You're paying £75K for a 500hp estate car and you might want a LSD.

Sure things like funky leather, super stereos, moving floors, glass roofs, disco lights and what have you, they make sense as options as it's personal taste, but a limited slip diff? That should be part of the AMG experience.

Merc overcharging for extras that should be standard is nothing new -i'm sure you know that :) .In theory then the E63 should really be @77k with LSD .And best to avoid the ceramic brakes at over 9k:eek:
Years back BMW 7 Series and Jag XJ you had to specify auto as manual was stupidly standard:dk: (Merc s class was standard auto)
Still, the E63 at 90k seems better than 85k G55.And, slightly aside , i rather have 90k E63 then a stupid 40k Toyota Cygnet or one of those horrifically priced electric cars.
