I've recently purchased dvd version 7 for an e-class w211. I've upgraded strait from version 4.1. Does anyone know if I've lost any features by not upgrading versions 5 & 6 first. I was lead to believe that the newer versions contained a full postcode search facility but I can only input 5 digits as per my previous version 4.1

Nothing will be lost and quite a bit will be gained. The most significant being TMC but to my knowledge the Post Code has not been improved.

Thanks for that John. I was just concerned that i may have missed upgrades by not installing v5 or v6

:) These upgrades are mainly mapping and the frustrating thing is these DVD's cover the whole of Europe, so the chances of finding anything relevant is pretty remote.

Not always true John.

Two annoying road updates near me were not on 5.1 but are on my new 6.1.

Takes about 18 months for road changes to be updated on most Sat-Nav maps.

Not true Brian,
Don't forget we are only talking about the 211 Navteq system and this can take 2 - 3 years or even longer. You were lucky to find the updates but they are few and very far between.:) I have actually wrote to NavTeq to get roads added that have been used for years.

How long did it take for that very popular road the M6 Toll to be added to the 211 Navteq system. I fully accept there are some excellent systems out there that have regular updates, but that is not what this is about. If we search this topic there have been numerous owners saying how they upgrade their DVD and have not found any improvements? The South Devon Mercedes-Benz Dealership closed down in approximately 2001, yet it took until version 4 or 5 of the DVD before the dealership was removed. Useless information to the great majority of owners but significant to anyone that required to know how to get to the nearest main dealer service centre if they were in South Devon. (They would drive to Torbay, then find out they had to go to either Exeter or Plymouth.

It only took one update 5.1 to 6.1 for my newly built MB Dealer to be added.

I wonder whether they wait for the road complex to be "completely finished" before they update the maps? Maybe the Highways division only tell them when they are finished? The reason I say this is because the M6 toll was done in stages, and it it one of the final changes to the A5 alignment and intersection with the M6 toll that has just been added on 6.1.

Pity one can't add and take away POI the same as one can do on portable sat navs..

:) Good point,
I dread to think when any road will be fully completed

It is not the fault of the mapping companies (Navtec or TeleAtlas). The process of adding new roads starts before the cup of navvy's tea has even been brewed. The map companies (well, I can only comment on TA, but I assume Navtec is the same) actually collect preliminary data from the planning departments of the local authorities at the completion of the approval process - including details of the road routing. The master maps held by the mapping companies are incredibly up-to-date for all major road projects. Of course, the minor roads in some far-flung new housing estate may take longer to get onto the map. TeleAtlas also work very closely with the Ordnance Survey (sensible chaps that they are), Navtec, sadly, do not.

Interestingly, with 211 disk version 5.1, when I drove along the M6 Toll road, the map showed me chugging through open fields but the display said "M6 Toll", though the routing engine was not able to route me along the toll road until version 6.

If you were previously on 4.1, it may be that your firmware is not the latest version. If you do a search in this section of the forum, you should be able to find the part number of the DVD (which only costs around £10-£12). That gives you a display of distance to destination and ETA.

How did you actually approach them? I've sent a few reports through their web feedback. The last one was about a major flaw on the intersection of one motorway, suggesting me to drive 10 miles on the motorway, and then make a U-turn to drive the right direction  I got a confirmation email from the first reports, but not the last one. Haven't been following if the changes have been updated, could do that as the web reporting tool would indicate their current map status.

Hi Diesel Benz,
I did it in exactly the same way and just like you I received a reply, from memory it was a very specific, personal response; in other words not computer generated and within two Mercedes upgrades the information had changed.

I have tactfully stated Mercedes upgrades because Navteq stated how the upgrades they give to car manufacturers are far more frequent than the upgrades that are regualrly churned out by Mercedes-Benz.

I have the first AVIC Pioneer Navteq DVD navigation system and that is several years old, but in those several years there has only been two upgrades, the last being about three years ago. (The newer AVIC DVD's are not compatible)

Hi Peter and thanks for that reply. So I take it that I can get this upgrade done at my next service or purchase a disc from somewhere and do it myself.

Once again thanks
Mick

Hi Mick,
I notice Peter has not got back to you yet and it's a very good point. Make sure you asdk for it to be done and if they don't know what your on about then get back to us. It is a quick update that allows for the ETA to be displayed plus a few other minor improvements. There is a whole thread on this topic.

Good luck,
John

Hi John,
Thanks for that advice. You may have a point in suggesting that MB garage may not know what I'm talking about as when I rang them for advice on installing v.7 they told me that the product code B6 782 38 55 for v.7 was an old disk that had been superceded several times and v4.1 that I replaced was in fact a more up to date version:confused: . While I consider myself an absolute novice on these matters I feel, via this forum, that I am more clued up than my local MB garage. ( Please don't all pile in and say "that's not hard" )
Once again thanks for the input John

Cheers Mick

The part number of the firmware DVD is W211 589 13 22 00. All the instructions for installation come with the DVD.

My local MB dealer had never heard of it when I went in to place my order. At first the parts department were convinced it was a workshop only item but they eventually ordered the DVD for me. They still seemed ignorant of its purpose when I collected the DVD so I doubt they obtained one for their own use.

No doubt the next punter attempting to order one will have to go through the same rigmarole.
