I need some advice regarding cherished plate transfers.

As we are in the process of selling the W168, I took the V5 and MoT to my local DVLA office for transferring the plate to the W169. I was told documents would follow in 7 working days.
I found a buyer for the car on Sunday (deposit taken :bannana:) and told them I'm waiting for documents to be sent through from DVLA.

Yesterday I received the certificate to get plates made up for both cars stogether with the revised MoT certificates and Tax Discs.

What I wasn't told by DVLA office was that the V5s would come from Swansea and could take up to 4 weeks to process

Can I sell the car without the new V5 (I have a copy of the old V5 with the cherished plate on it) and pass it on once received?
If I did this, would my wife be liable for any parking tickets/fines etc that the new owner would incur as the vehicle would still be registered in her name.

What are your experiences in waiting times for V5s from Swansea?

Hi Anil, in my case the V5 arrived back in about a week. Not sure about your other concerns.

V5's have always been pretty quick for me (within a week), but i guess it can vary.

no idea if you can/should sell the car without the V5.... also would the buyer be happy to drive it away without having the "new keeper suppliment"? not sure i would....

if think it all lies on whether the buyer is happy to have the car without the keeper suppliment... you can simply wait for the form to come back from DVLA and then send it off and maybe post the keeper suppliment to the buyer?

you would of course be liable for fines etc during this time though. but you are anyway until DVLA log the new keeper i believe......

i'd just tell the buyer to wait which you've already done anyway - just say you've not recieved everything back yet but hope it wont take too long....

You should have received the stamped green part of the V5 with the new reg on it.

Technically you are supposed to wait for the new log book to come before selling the car but of course no one ever does, we certainly dont.

Give the buyer all the documents including the green slip, make out a receipt which both parties sign... then just fill out the log book in his name when it comes and send to DVLA.
Send him the right hand part of the booklet (page 3 if you like) as this enables him to buy tax etc until the full log book comes back in his name.

You can sell with out the V5, BUT YOU SHOULDN'T

For what ever reason, if in the process, they ask to inspect the car, and you no longer have it in your possession, then this can lead to a whole hill of trouble!

Just from experience, only once has this ever occured to me, but luckily, i had the car in my possession at the time!

Put yourself in the buyer's position.

Would you buy the car in these circumstances?

I have bought AND sold cars without the V5 (waiting, as you are, for it to come back from the DVLA) without any problems.

The V5 only shows the keeper anyway, not the owner.

Don't wory about it, just get the new owner to sign something with the date on it, and once the V5 turns up, post it off to the DVLA with their details on it.

Who wanted to inspect the car then?

DVLA.

On retaining the registration mark, they can periodically ask to inspect the vehicle to check vin, car, model etc..

dont know why, but i think it is written on the reverse in the small print when they do random inspections at the DVLA office

You are right there Boss. I had a car inspected by the DVLA when I wanted to remove my private plate. I was told this was a random check to make sure the VIN and engine numbers match up. According to DVLA they check 1 in 10 cars that apply for a plate transfer.

Sorry Boss but you are slightly incorrect. If they want to inspect the car they will do this BEFORE they even do the transfer.. once they send back the green slip, amended tax etc its all done.

possibly.

like i said, it has happened only once to me about 5 yrs ago, dont recall the exact point, but it occured at some point during the transfer process..

Before, during, early stage, middle stage.. can't remember

definately before they complete the transfer... we do a few every week ;)

cheers

Jay

OBVIOUSLY BEFORE THEY COMPLETE THE TRANSFER MATE LOL....

Im just saying at some point during the process! Defo not after the transfer has completed...

Thanks for the replies all.

Jay - The transfer has been done, and the private plate is now on the W169, and the W168 has its original plate on it.
This has all been done without DVLA knowing anything about the sale of the W168 as the transfer was done before it was sold.

Could I have speeded up the process if the plate change and new keeper was done together?

Just received a V5 document today in the post. Car was bought about one and a half weeks ago (on a Saturday), received this morning so that's not a bad turnaround from Swansea - pretty much a week if you include the post factor :)

Will
