Could I have speeded up the process if the plate change and new keeper was done together?

No you did it the right way around as you have to do the transfer as its your plate.

The whole transfer system is pre historic IMO.. the system needs a revamp. You could do the whole transfer over the counter, now it takes weeks.

Went into a garage with my sister...she bought the car she wanted, dealer transfered her plate there and then. One call to insurance company and another to Dept of Registry. Drove out with her new car 1 hour later (max)...

Mass - USA. Perhaps we could learn a few things.

I asked why they need to post the docs, and they told me it this way it reduces waiting time in the queue - therefore they see more customers in a day:wallbash:

Got home today to find a letter from DVLA. It was the V5 for the W169 - but they got it wrong, as they have sent it through with the original number plate, not my wife's cherished plate .
Still waiting for the W168 V5. I'll be calling the prospective buyer tomorrow to tell them to postpone collection until next week .

thats probably something seperate.. when you bought the W169 did you apply for a log book in your name?

I would also suggest as Jay has that you can sell the car with the new keeper supplement which would have also been stamped with the new (original reg).

This portion with the photocopy of the original V5C should be sufficient as the serial number for the V5C appears on all of the sections. Most buyers (especially if they have had a plate transfer will understand). I've done it this way a few times, I've also done it the other way where I waited for the docs to come through prior to advertising.

The DVLA claim 4-6 weeks but in reality it's generally much quicker...

When the W169 was purchased, my wife's details were correctly submitted on the docs. I'll be calling them tomorrow to see what has happened, as they have incorrectly issued the V5 with the original number plate not the cherished plate - although both applications were done together.
I do not have the green slip for the W168 as I started the plate change process before I found the buyer.
At the counter at DVLA, they took the W168 V5 not, just stamp it with plate change details so I am a it stuck with regards to giving the green slip to the prospective new owner.

I once sold my old car to a friend of mine, and started the transfer process for the plate to my new car at the same time, knowing that we could sort things out as we went, thus leaving my plates on the old car, as he needed it. DVLA sent all of MY documentation for the new, re-registered car to my friends house in error. No resulting difficulties, but plenty of potential! Moral of the story is make sure your plates are secured before letting anything go.

yep same thing happened when i bought my 500E, the docs should have been sent to me but they got sent to Talbir... lord knows how they managed to do that as it was all done in my name and address..
