E 300TD Glow plugs query

Hey everyone!

I've got an E300TD 1998 year. My car's glow plug's light in the instrument panel switches on even when the engine is running and then it goes out after a while. Would anyone know what the problem is? and it doesn't happen every time.

Secondly, can anyone help me out with the amount of oil im suppose to have in the auto transmission?? Its a 722.6 gearbox. Some people say its suppose to be 7.2 litres whereas i've come across articles on the web where they say its suppose to be 9.2 litres.

The 722.6 Auto box holds 7.5 liters (+0.5) from new, the drain plug on the torque converter was deleted in late 1999-2000 so that cant be drained and this must be taken into account when changing the fluid.

My car has the drain plug on the torque converter... so the 7.5 litres, is it only for the tranny or is it for both the tranny and the torque converter?

Anyone with the info on that glow plugs thingy?

Thanx Television,

My car has the drain plug on the torque converter... so i should be putting 7.5 litres, is it only for the tranny or is it for both the tranny and the torque converter?

Get a MB dipstick to measure it properly so the level is perfect.

The glow plug light means you have a faulty glow plug or two.

Dipstick
Easy to make your own as it measures from the bottom up from where it contacts sump.

Just put some marks on a white springy curtain rod wire.
Do it after a fast run and it will be real close to the 80c temp +/- a poofteenth.

Thanx Bazzle!!

This info is really handy as i live in a country where the dealership will not have the dipstick, most probably!

So where should the oil level be when cold and after a fast run?? should it be at the 6.5 mark after a run?? and whats the measuring unit on the measuring tape?

The gearbox takes at least 20-30 mins of driving to warm up properly. The level should be at the uppermost (6.4) mark at gearbox temp of 80degreesC
