My mate has just bought a stolen recovered [not sure whether cat C or D] 1999 W210 - he hasn't got a key or a logbook - chicken and egg - how does he get a key from MB without the log book which he can't get until it's inspected at Chadderton [which he can't get to because he hasn't got a key].

He's been into MB Bolton and he said "they were very nice about it but refused the key."

I would suggest that a copy of the receipt is sent to MB HQ in Milton Keynes and tell them the position.

He should be able to get the log book as this is nothing to do with what you want to do with the car, of find out who he last owner was, then ask them for a key

I feel for your mate and I go along with Television. I have only posted to thank you for pointing out how difficult it is for just anyone to obtain a key.

Thanks
John

Quite right too, as we don't want any old Tom, **** or Harry getting hold of a key do we?

I dont think that MB will release a key or order a key without the log book...... i recall getting a key when my c class was in my mums name they wanted passports log books and a letter from my mum saying i was who i said i was and written authority to issue a key!!!!!!

I love that sort of thing! You could just write it out yourself.

There was a thread about people ordering the chrome keys from the US - just give them the VIN and they send you a key.

Nearly correct:

It can be done, many here have. I ordered mine from OEMPARTSDIRECT.COM, on the other side of the country, faxed my registration to them and they sent the key, as long as all addresses match (credit card, registration and shipping), they are good to go.

Basically the check the registration number against the car, then check the car against the applicant, then check the applicant against the credit card. Not quite the same as Tom, Richard, or Harry Stranger walking into Halfords, or a main dealer.

Checking the US sites it would appear some sites offer the key for $68 but when you get deep into the ordering process tghis price goes up. I never checked to see if they are cheaper than the UK, but it might be a little difficult trying to make a purchase.

edit
Late last year someone in the US purchased two for $347 at a place called Roslyn Rallye MB.

How would someone in the US check a UK registration?

I think that email is talking about an order within the US.

It is Rory,
I have not heard of anyone in the UK successfully buying\importing a key, but the post I submitted highlights the procedures they are required to comply with.

Would we be able to comply with all these? How would they get access to any of the required databases?
