E class estate: 211 amg or new 212?

I am thinking of getting a new or newish e class estate. I could probably just afford a low spec 212 new but this budget would also get me into a 211 e63 estate. What should I do guys and girls? It will be a long term
Keeper.

What are your priorities? Cost of ownership, driving experience, quality, style?

Let me get this straight- either a S212 E200 4cylinder poverty spec or a S211 E63 AMG V8 with top spec? Did you ask yourself this question out loud?

Seriously though, it all depends on what mileage you will be doing I suppose:dk:

Id go for the E63 every time , not only for the previously mentioned reasons , but also because IMHO the 211 is a far nicer car the 212 . I think the 212 hasn't got the same quality feel to the interior trims that the 211 had .

Hello

What millage do you do?

The E63 should win every time, however if like my brother you do 50 - 60K miles a year then maybe not actually the best choice... (servicing, tyres, fuel, ride, loss etc)

If you can afford to run a E63 then I would have that easily over a boggo new shape E class :)

The estates in my book looks EVEN better,

So if you find one with a warranty and you can keep extending that and don't do silly miles E63 easy.

Thanks all. This will be for day to day drudgery/ short daily commute and touring holidays on continent once or twice a year. Priority is reliability and comfort. Will get a cheap fun car for weekends. Head says 212 but I have been bitten by the amg bug....

Sorry to rain on your parade, but the two phrases I have highlighted are very much mutually exclusive. If you can only 'just afford' anything, then the E63 is a world of pain just waiting to happen.

Just my opinion based on the facts presented...

I agree with corned.

If you're to buy 2 cars any way I'd personally split the money balance differently. I'd get a nice but basic good value 211 for the daily commute. Depreciation and running costs will then just be the 211 average, rather than the AMG 'special rate'. With the money saved get a nicer w/e car. Putting lower mileage on to that car will also help to keep depreciation modest. But all IMHO.

Swap the numbers on your one,and you have an E63 :D

That really does not sound like good use of an AMG!
Spend the bulk of the available money on something that suits the task for the majority of the time.
My cars do just that. I tend to drive with some degree of sanity most of the time, but when I feel need for speed I keep something in the garage which costs nupence in deprecation and less than £100 a year to insure. (It has only two wheels;))
It only does a very small percentage of my miles, but they are all memorable.
Whilst the E63 will do the "day to day drudgery", will it really be happy?:dk:

Some good advice guys.

Let me give you a bit more info and see how it changes things.

I don't want a new car at all. My current car is my favourite ever car and I think it meets all of my needs. However my wife perceives my car as unreliable ( it is not but does need regular maintenance). She doesn't want a breakdown on our holiday to Europe this year and thinks we should get a newer car. She says I can get whatever I like including an AMG but it needs to be newer and reliable. The budget is arbitrary. I just can't contemplate spending much more than 30k on a car.

Does this change your views?

Yes, it does.

What I would now suggest is that you buy neither! Stick with your E36.

If you are concerned about reliability taking it abroad, then spend some of that £30k (and it would not need much) in having a proper MB Indie (I can happily name a couple or so on here) give it a thorough service and go through it with a fine-tooth comb just before departure. Then it will be bomb-proof for your continental voyage.

What's a "short commute"? If it's stop start and the car won't be fully warmed up it will be really punishing on any vehicle. I've got a snotter Clio for school runs and short trips. I wouldn't want to subject an E63 to that sort of punishment. Plus your mpg would be nearing single figures.

I only use the E500 for runs of 30 mins plus. Which (in my book) is medium to long runs (inc lots of 200-400 mile weekends away, and one or two longer trips such as an annual run to southern France).

So get a late E55 for distances and fun and a runabout of some description.

Lots of good advice. Dash's solution by far the cheapest!

My commute is very short at present (infact I walk!), but Im in the process of selling my house and want to move a bit further out of town to get some more space, so will soon have to drive but commute would still only be 15 to 20mins. I try to get to the coast most weekends in the summer (90 mins away), and need to take a surfboard and the family with me so it needs to be a big car.

I hate spending big money on cars and see it lost in depreciation. What a waste! Maybe Im just a bit tight with money!

Im grateful for your help and will think it over. Need to make a decision before test driving an E63 as there will be no way back from there......

Biglips, please let us know how you get on, I do 20 miles a day to work, country lanes mostly, but the fact is you have a huge budget their and the AMG would cover all the bases from what you have said, depreciation is unavoidable and I know I'm in for plenty, but my car gives me a feeling that makes it a non issue, it's still the best fun I have with cloths on from the minute I press the start button!!!!
Can't wait to know how your test drive went!

Still mulling it over

Unfortunately there is a 211 E63 estate at my local dealership for about £31k that I am struggling to resist the temptation to test drive as I know I will want it once i have driven it. Definately will test drive a 212 first.

Main problem is that my E36 still makes me smile every time I drive it and cant see the logic in replacing it. Its not as if it is worth a huge amount because of its mileage so it wont go far towards the deposit on an E63. Will the E63 offer me that much more? It is a 2006 and may be storing up some major bills once out of warranty.....
