E-Class shoots to thrill | Auto Express News | News | Auto Express

It’s a fascinating discovery! Our sources have revealed that Mercedes is readying a production version of the Fascination Concept, first seen at the 2008 Paris Motor Show.
The three-door estate, or shooting brake as the body style is known, will expand Mercedes’ range even further. It stretches the E-Class family to a total of five derivatives, joining the saloon, coupé, convertible and estate when it arrives in showrooms in 2011.
With its distinctive wheelarches and angular front end, the Paris concept was originally a preview of the E-Class Coupé. But latest reports suggest that it could become a standalone model. Mercedes is crossing its fingers that the originality of a sports estate will match the success currently enjoyed by the CLS four-door coupé.
The engine line-up will be shared with the E-Class Coupé, which means a choice of frugal four-cylinder and V6 diesels. Mercedes’ BlueEFFICIENCY technology will be available, while four-cylinder petrol engines will be fitted with stop-start. At the top end of the range, an E500 complete with a 5.5-litre V8 will be offered, as well as a storming AMG variant.
While this sporty E-Class wagon is a few years away, the standard estate is set to appear at the Frankfurt show in September. The convertible version will follow soon after.

I Like!

Shooting Brake is just an old fashioned name for an estate car and to me, it is daft having a two door estate... Then again Mercedes have started building daft cars and have the four door coupe, so with that in mind, I guess the same designers would build a two door estate.

My thoughts are it looks butt ugly and no way hoo-zey ;)

Shude's estate car is a much better concept vehicle and far more practical :thumb:

Shude's. Where can we see that?

A 'real' W212 'shooting brake' would have a B-pillar, for sure. I think it would look good.
Like a modern Lancia Beta HPE (even down to the rust?? ;))

I like it. R-Class-ish at the front, Q7-ish at the rear, but with nicer details. More pointless than a R-Class, but sexy and sophisticated family transport to my eyes.

I love the completely pillarless look but agree, I suspect that a two door estate car with only 4 seats will have a very limited market

I wonder if the production version will have so much glass and so few pillars.

I like the look but its going to need very good climate control to keep it remotely cool on a sunny day - theres so much glass! Speaking of which were have the side windows gone? Do they all lower into the bodywork or is the image just artistic licence that will be ruin by the practiclities of actually attaching glass to tehvehicle?

Don't forget that two door esates have been tried before:

As Spike said.......I also think these cars have a limited market.

The difference being the Renault was always c*** looking. The Mercedes looks wonderful. IMO.

You can just see the tops of the middle glass.

I agree 100% :thumb:
I also think it looks like a BMW:eek:

I must be odd. I like the Avantime too. And R-Classes.

What are the chances that this is actually based on the W204?

Probably high. Utterly pointless car, a 2dr pillarless wagon.

I'd rather they spent the money making the interiors nicer or painting them thicker so they last longer. The 204 is a bit plasticy inside and the 212 isn't much better. Road testers have noted these too. Audi seem to be doing a nicer job. I'd rather have the car better appointed than satisfying some arty type with a 2dr estate.:ban:

I understand where you are coming from, but i can't be alone in that i never have rear passengers but always have an estate for practicality and size. Without these sort of cars becoming available I always turn to a 4x4 which is a bit overkill. Thumbs up from me :bannana:

Would you buy a new one?
