is there a major difference between 220 280 in terms of economy performance etc. i am after one for the wife. which is the one to go for. i want a mixture of refinement and performance with reasonable economy... as i have a cl500 to run on a weekend. by the way i am talking about the w124

Hi,

The E280 or E320 is probably the best choice. They are heavier on fuel (obv) but they are very very well built (M104 I6 Engines) and are virtually bulletproof if maintained correctly.

The E220 is a slightly slower model, although its much easier to work on, and easier on the wallet. If it was my choice i'd probably take the E280 but i'm biased - i've also had the flagship E500 and found nothing can beat the silky smooth 280 engine.

Kind Regards.

For a good power to weight ratio the 280 is the best all round, many ladies are lighter on the throttle and the 200 is more economical just by a touch, so that may be OK

Around town, my 320 averages about 18-19mpg, rising to 29ish (best I've had) on the motorway.

The 280 engine is possibly the best for what you want. Power when you need it, some sort of reasonable fuel economy  and reliability but look out for the wiring loom as they tend to be a tad delicate on these engines.

220. Far mor economical in town, not much different on motorway. Cheaper to maintain and service. Less complicated 5 speed auto that has been an MB staple forever. Adequate performance especially if in the new 170bhp trim. Lighter and smaller too so car is better balanced.

I ran a 280 for three months on hire while my 270 was being repaired, averaged 30-31mpg, best being 40mpg, the 270 is averaging 34mpg with a best of 45. Only had the C220 for 3 days but on a london run (36-37mpg in my E270) it averaged 44mpg. Even allowing for the smaller lighter car that's a big difference.

The 220 is quite smooth and well balanced too. I only bought the 270 because it was the same price used as a 220.

For the purpose they want it for,I felt the same as you, they have a faster car in the family

The original poster is talking about W124 series cars with petrol engines.

If the 220 has adequate performance for your Wife, then I say go for that as they are much more economical and just as reliable.

Are you talking about the older W124? ;)

The car in the picture is pre sept 1989
The picture is merely to highlight what the 124 looks like :) as timskemp is talking about:
