Hi guys - travelled down to london and back last week and decided to see how far i could push my MPG .....so all windows shut, heater/aircon off, tyre pressure checked and set....i managed(round trip 500mls) 58.4 MPG for trip (my reset MPG is now 50MPG), it was all motorway and i averaged around 65mph(due to M6 road works), most of time was hitting 75-80 mph on clear patches...i thought averaging 58 mpg was amazing for a car this size, my dads micra only does that lol...

I did add a Lucas injection cleaner before the trip and use it regularly on several cars over the years ..it works really well on both disel/petrol...

Any one else got this MPG on a long run, is this normal?

Comments plz...

A member on here (Mactech) managed to get 53 mpg out of his S-Class.

It would be really interesting to see what kind of figures you got if you reduced the speed to say 50... It is a far more economical speed.

Best I got out my car is 54mpg but I bet on a long motorway trip at 60mph it would climb to not far off your figures. I have heard of 220cdi 211s doing 63mpg

best i got is 8mpg in my e55 lol

The best i have from e220 is 55.4mpg with one passenger. if i drive around the speed limit around town i can get 40mpgs

Best I've managed from my W126 500SEL is 25.6mpg on a long run. The average for a tankful is usually around the 19/20 mark.

Hi Guys

I have the E220Cdi pre-facelift on a 55 plate and have never managed to get more than 42MPG on a run. Around town the most I have got is 28MPG.

I always keep tyre pressure at the required level, have recently had the filters changed, the oil changed and used lucas and STP injector cleaner.

Can any of you guys suggest what more I could do to improve the efficiency on my E220?

I have noticed that my engine heats up to about 80 degrees. Is this the same for your cars?

Thanks

Hello my dads E320Cdi Estate will do 40mpg on any trip and he saw 60mpg coming home from Europe from Dover on a space saver doing 55mph. He had a range in the distance as 1000 miles :)

He is always amazed how good it is compared to small engined cars that are 'meant' to be much better.

He has owned it since new in 2003 and its the longest car he has kept, well run in now on 120K and does a Europe trip every other month :) think it just gets use to it.

Its so good he is finding it hard to swap and has tried all sorts.

28mpg sounds ok for around town.

Can get my car (same as yours)) to over 42mpg by driving gently. Fairly rapid cross country driving is only 38mpg but with care she'll do over 50mpg.

I'd suggest checking the tyre pressures, using millers ecomax fuel additive, and avoiding supermarket fuel.

A smooth driving style and obviously no speeding helps too. Sticking to 55-60mph see's mid 40-high 40's and gentle acceleration and deceleration (rather than harsh braking and acceleration) see's the MPG rise. At 70mph mway speeds see's about 47mph.

Combined for our cars is 44.8mpg which is achievable with gentle but moderately brisk driving.

Thanks for your reply. Can I ask what presuure you inflate your tyres to? I have the 16 inch alloys and keep the rear at about 34PSi and front on 30PSi?

Also what reading does your thermostat give you once the car is warm and been running for a few miles?

Thanks

I have 32psi all round, and 80c once upto temp. Can take it about 10-15 miles to warm up.

W211 e220 cdi 49.6 mpg

Was well impressed with this on a 700 mile trip with various jams, road works and 40mph limits.

700 miles from a full tank can't be too bad at all.

I'm sure folding the mirrors in to improve the aerodynamics makes a big difference though. :D
