IF some one else has fitted a new chain tensioner and not pre filled it with oil, would the chain not tension properly? and if the guides wasnt changed, would welding/adding some thing onto the end of the tensioner help it push the tensioner out to tighten the chain??

What?

Tensioner is "Collapsed" ? (From lack of proper Pre-Fill) AND you're gonna
WELD on it?
[1.You're into Non-Empirical Testing,Re-Engineering of Mercedes Specifications.]
(I cannot Prognosticate any other than an Un-Happy ending...)

2.The Engineers,Bean Counters and Constructors in Stuttgart have made readily
available to YOU NEW Spares @ Mercedes Dealerships Worldwide to REPAIR
the DAMAGE.

3. The Guides were not changed out? (AND Needed to be?) You'll need an NEW set of
Chain(S) and Sprockets, sooner rather than Later.

Its had last year looking at the paper work, new chain, tensioner, all new buckets and still its very noisy. The chain isnt that tight. Couldnt find any new guides listed in the paper work, so guessing they never bothed to change them as u normaly reck the head gasket taking the front cover off.
So in english,
Was asking would the tensioner not be working properly if not prefilled before fitting allowing the chain to still rattle??????
The guides i wouldnt know if they needed to be changed or not, as i didnt own the car then.

And adding some thing on inside of an engine happens every day, Take it have never built, or been around when a Hard core race car is built. There are many corns that get cut to find out where the problem is then, fix it properly.
And if it does kill the engine then stuff it, £350 and a mornings work and its got another one.

But rather get this one working right. Got stg2 chips all mapped and waiting for me to fit them.

The tensioner should be fine.

The 'orrible noise may well be coming from the vacuum pump, there is a bearing that falls to bits.
As it is easy enough to do, I suggest you remove the vacuum pump and have a look see.

thank you alex ill have a look at that first.

Ok had an interesting find on the car, Found the top part of the chain tensioner guide had snapped off and was rattling about, lucky the tensioner itself was stopping the broken part falling downwards. It broke right above where the tensioner pushes against the guide. STill got a nice rattle but hoping that a new Guide will help as never know where else it is broken. Not looking forward to doing it. As for buying a guide, merc only? any one know a ruff price of them??
Know the head gasket runs over the top of the chain cover but RT silicone will save me taking the head off i hope
