Hi
I currently own a year 2000 E320 CD which has covered around 100,000 miles. Whilst changing the heaters plugs i notices quite a bit of dried black oily stuff around the No 2 injector. This wasnt there 6 months ago when i last had the cover off. Upon starting the engine with the bonnet open and cover removed a ticking noise could clearly be heard from this injector as well as a puff of grey smoke appearing on every firing stroke. The smoke appears to be coming from the join between the injector and the head.
My intention was to buy a new injector and sealing rings,
Does anyone have any view on this.

Certainly looks as if you need a new sealing ring mate. whether you need a new Injector could be debateable. :(

I echo Brians comment.
Also you casually said about buying a new injector, you obviously don't know the price yet.

known fault change all the copper seat washers pence each 2 hrs labour you will get more mpg and performance just done mine on a c220 cdi

injectors can be serviced new about £300 each recon £160 from mbz others £100 all in injectors esp cdi do not last as long as the none cdi type

the dried black oily stuff can be sound insulation that has been covered in fuel and if it is hard ie like coal then you may have a fuel leak from the o rings on the fuel return nb leak very tiny but over time reacts with the insulation

Thanks for the replies, they were helpful.
Although I have removed injectors before, I haven't on these cars. A cross sectional diagram showing how the injector sits in the head, torque settings, and/or a brief description on how to remove these injectors would be much appreciated.
I have also attached a photo showing the dried black stuff I mentioned. This has built up over the course of several hundred to several thousand miles and will scrape off quite easily although it is quite thick in places. i was wondering whether anyone has seen this before.
Cheers

That is horrible! What does it smell of?

yep same on mine send a photo and letter to mbz o rings are failing some body will have a fire the best way to clean up the mess is with oven cleaner and wd40 the injectors can stick and need all the cr#p removed they have a long bolt with hex fittings and a u shape holding bracket make sure nothing falls down the hole and clean the thread for the bolt very well and also make sure the wiring is not damaged i woul advice a new fuel return pipe and sealing o rings torque settings canot remember but will look up

before you dismantle check the fuel return pipe for leaks the leak can look like it is from the injector but it is from the o rings in the top of the injectors.
do not just change a couple of the seat washers they tend to all blow after about 60 to 80 k
and we buy diesel to save money ?????

Do you service your car at all??????????

This machine needs a major service including Injectors.

Thank you for the replies,
The car is serviced roughly every 10,000 miles or less and this fault has occurred at some point after the last service. The car is not in use at the moment (until I get this fixed), I'm using either the company vehicle or my other car. The injectors could perhaps do with a service although I’m still averaging over 40 to the gallon. I suspect the puff of grey smoke that’s appearing from the joint between the head and the injector on every firing stroke is coming from a leaking fire seal washer. The black stuff I believe is dried oil that is seeping into the joint from a damaged seal as a result and is being blown out and splattered around. There is no excessive pressure in the crankcase. The leakage return pipe work has been replaced before and is due to be replaced again. I’ll let you know how I get on when I’ve time to strip it down.
Many thanks

look at the sound insulation from your photo it looks like a fuel leak how hard is the black stuff oil tends not to set hard fuel return o rings are failing all the time andso are blowing injector seat washers.

I have had the same problem today. I was having the car serviced and noticed all the black stuff built up over the 1st Injector ( Nearest to the front of the car).

I would really appreciate if you could let me know how it went in the end. Did you need a new Injector ? I have striped it down and removed the injector but the return hose is cracked and will need to replace that too.

Thanks for your help.

Chris

Morning,

If you look at the picture above it is exactly the same but on the front cilinder. As we were removing the injector the fuel feedback hose cracked as it became brital so ill need to get replecements and new seals before I can test if the injector is ok.

change all seals and o rings and you need mbz special lube for the injectors and a new bolt they s-t-r-e-t-c-h with use ie expand like cylinder head bolts
do not over tighten and check torque settings different injectors need a different torque
mbz modified injectors and some screw in ie they know they leak

Thanks, I have changed the first O ring and seems to have stoped the leak. I have the other O rings to replace as I think the 2nd and 3rd might be on there way out. I also changed the fuel feed hose as it became brital.

When I asked my mechanic what lube to use he said that they never use anything ?? Is this correct as I dont want to do them all wrong. ( the first one is looking fine with no lube though )

Would a leaky injector like this impair performance, i.e. as if where a petrol care miss firing ? and would it induce the effects of more black smoke ? If I floor mine at the moment the amount of black smoke that bellows out is phenomenal for the duration of the acceleration filling the whole path behind me with smoke that lingers in the air.

Any ideas ?
