2003 e329 cdi wont start after fuel filter change
Hi,

I just did basic service on my e320 cdi, changed all filters and oil. it was starting instantly until I changed the fuel filter. Now it will not fire. I have had years of diesel engine servicing under my belt but this is a bit more technical being the cdi and ecu's etc. I also replaced all diesel leak off flexi hoses as one split last week.

I unclipped the center fitting on the top of the filter housing and moved it to one side, I then unscrewed the large round top off the filter housing, I replaced the fuel filter, refitted the top of the filter by screwing it back on nice and tight, I reattached the center pipe and clip in place then tried to start it but it is not even coughing now. What is the method to manually bleed the injectors on a cdi if it will not self bleed. On the older simple diesels I would crack open the injector pipes and wait for fuel to squirt out then nip them back up. Can this be done on a CDI fuel system.

Or is it just keep crancking till it decides to fire up again.

I have gear selector in "P" so it should know it is ok to start up, I have filled up fuel filter housing as much as I could till it was up to top of housing, but still not starting.

Getting desperate now

You say it's a 2003?
Then it could be a w210. Does it have a plastic filter housing? If so they can be a pita to get started! Just make sure the o rings in top of the fuel filter haven't been split on removal and refitting. If they are ok then you just need to keep cranking it ( a booster will help spin it faster ) as the lift pump is mechanical and driven off the cam gear.
Also check no injector plugs or the camshaft sensor plug haven't been dislodged!
If it's a w211 then it should just start after leaving the ignition on for 10 seconds or so. You will hear the fuel system purge the air back into the tank ( bubbling noise )

All running now

Hi thank you for replies.

yes it is a w210 model.

I filled the filter housing as much as I could with diesel and tried again, still nothing but battery was struggling now. i put it on a jump start and it finally fired up tfxxx.

Now I only bought this vehicle last week of a scabby car dealer who had'nt even bothered to valet it. I expected a few problems and am quite happy to deal with them as I have owned a few merc cars and vans so am used to it.

The next problem I am about to deal with is that the auto box is not "kicking down" I have not checked the transmission fluid yet but will later today. I noticed before I serviced it yesterday that the engine would not rev up beyond 3k. I did expect this to be blocked filters. the air filter was the worst I have ever seen, the oil filter not much better. all brand new now.

Now what I noticed is that when I start the engine in "park" the engine will rev straight round to the red. But when you select drive and and are driving along it will not rev past the 3k again. I am hoping that it is due to low transmission fluid, along with why it is not kicking down.

Or is the computer putting car into "limp" mode.

As ever all insider knowledge is more than welcome so i can get the better of the big german

It is being thrown into limp, possibly via the MAF. Best advice is instead of playing a guessing game, get it on a STAR machine, will save you cash in the long run

engine revs limited in drive

is a "star" machine a mercedes specific diagnostic machine or would most garages have one?

It is a Mercedes specific system, lots of MB independents have them, generic fault code readers have their uses but most ,if not all manufacturers, have their own specific computer diagnostic systems.

just crack injectors spin over till fuel to each injector retighten crank should start

As mentioned above just keep turning it over, jump leads and another car or battery would be useful,it will start, just takes abit of start and dont keep pumping the accelarator

Definitely DO NOT do this. Totally wrong. Car started now anyway. It can take a while and get you worried!
