Is it easy/possible to take all the running gear of a 1995 w124 E420 saloon and transplant it on my 1995 e320 coupe.

I really want/need to swop engine ,gearbox ,prop ,exhaust and wiring loom.

Are there any considerations re the LHD and RHD differences.

I want to end up with a simple V8 W124 COUPE ...has any one got one

Comments / advice welcome

Cheers

Mark

I think the steering will be the issue, fouling the o/s bank/exhaust, otherwise it would be a common conversion using the 4.2/5.0 engine from the w140/c140.

thanks guys for the same observations....

is it possible to take the cross members etc off the e420 and all the bits or can I purchase them anywhere ?

as the v8 fits into the saloon ..is the actual problem a lhd to rhd issue with space ?

surely I cannot be the only one to want to do this

I am not technical ... just keen to achieve a v8 coupe !

An E500 coupe would be awsome!!!. The 420 V8 is almost the same power as the the E36 AMG (270 ish BHP i think). It may be easier to source an M104 AMG unit an install that. I know hat has been done by some members here and I think Dash (DW124) is looking at doing this with his black W124 Saloon.
however the idea of a V8 coupe does sound tempting

if it works it will be a wide bodied e420 coupe I want a v8 not a straight 6...its the noise and torque !

NOT EASY! New engine cross member and secondary bulkhead required. All the FACTORY v8 models were LHD so there may be steering box/ exhaust manifold clearance issues.
Have a look at this set of pics. Motorwerks Group, Inc - Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Audi Sales and Service Center
I have looked at the photos but not sure what I am looking at ..are they showing the mods needed for a v8 in a LHD ?
i have now looked through archieve threads and found that you have answered this question before in 2007 ...still has no one done this or atempted it ??

Dude:That was my other option, you can find many cheap 400 & 420 124s in germany so you have everything you need?
Mark:I honestly don`t see the problem about it,surely is doable :thumb:

morning dash...yes thats what I thoght but there seems to be an issue with space if you read the above postings

I dont want to start something I cannot do/finish

When I`m done with the saloon,I`ll be looking into the estate project
I might do that transplant on it ;) I know the steering is the issue & is why they did not make the V8s in rhd.I`m going to try anyway, the worse that can happen is that i`ll end with a V8 lhd 124.

there is a guy on 190.rev who has converted his 190 to rack and pinion.

that would kill two birds with one stone.

The cost of this conversion I think would be price prohibitive. You would have to remove the steering box and replace it with a steering rack from a clk. Lots of engineering. The cross member will need changing too, not easy to get it within 2mm of original. The bulkhead will need some work as will the front end of the car to allow for a larger radiator. You may find you will need an oil cooler which is doable but tricky to engineer into what is an already full engine bay.

I expect to be shouted down here. But these are my thoughts.
