E430 - which atf ?

I've recently acquired a year 2001 E430 Avantgarde.
VIN: WDB 2100702 with the 113940 engine.

The manual doesn't go out of its way to tell me which transmission model it has or what the ATF spec is.

Any advice re ATF, please.
It's got about 125000 miles on it and has probably never had a fluid change

I would be surprised if yours isn't a 722.6 gearbox [is it listed on the build / spec sheet in the back of your owners manual?], and the oil spec is listed on page 5 of this document;

So, oil which meets 236.14 will be OK [assuming 722.6].

with a gearbox being so much to replace your better safer than sorry , get some mb atf

The transmission type is on the spec sheet at the back of the spec sheet at the back of the owner's manual.
It is, indeed, a 722.6 transmission.
