In my usual fashion I managed to shoe horn a test drive in a S211 E55 into a familly trip to the Zoo:D
Wow:eek: what a car, turned up and the guy just threw me the keys and said give me a call when you get back, brave move on his part, but then I did leave my car with him, still dangerous these days I would have thought.
Set off down the Bypass and put my foot down, cue angry growl, thrust and a collective gasp from my passengers, 'calm down that was just half power'
Beautifully balanced, very comfortable and a great combination of comfort and rigidity.
I feel this is going to hurt the bank balance somewhat:D
This car is Ex Merc and had every conceivable extra apart from the moving boot floor thingy, which I dont understand anyway. Heated vibrating massaging cooling seats, phone prep, keyless go, vents everywhere, so many buttons to play with!
Any way explained my position to the guy and told him there are two others available to me, he took this on board and agreed to switch my seven seats option across as well as my Digi TV, headrest screens, PS2, AV connectors in the glove box etc, and is coming back to me this morning with a deal.
If it is good then I will be the proud owner of a new car.
The only thing I noticed when he started it to drive away was a slight whine on start up, is that normal?

The 55 engine is a cracker isn't it?:thumb:
All the room and all the vroom you could ever want.
Just get used to seeing a little more of fuel stations after the 320 CDI;)

Having had a 4.4 Range Rover I know what Fuel stations look like!
It will be worth it for the car, what an engine noise!

its an amazing motor, just done a 4 hour drive this morning and took the "Short" option on the nav through some lovely countryside nr milton keynes, was a hairy ride with a few overtakes and z bends , defo gets the heart pumping!

not sure what you mean by a slight whine tho?

It was a mechanical whine, almost transmission, which worried me a bit.

Would brisk acceleration out of a sharp corner identify whether it was rear differential or not?

It was coming front the front, nothing untoward on the drive, I have heard this noise before and it didnt spark me to think badly towards it.

might be worth getting a local indi to have a quick look over? theres loads of little noises, buzzes, hissing that im still getting used to which are perfectly normal!

That's what I was thinking, I will get it checked, but I'm sure that it is just a noise that I need to know about!

Yep they whine - some more than others. However Im talking about on start up in neutral you get a loud whine settling to a quieter whine and from the back a rythnmic rasp that goes in 20 seconds or so.
Whilst driving you should only get a whine when accelerating from low revs as at higher revs the exhaust drives the whine out.

Yep, sounds fairly normal to me. High pitched initially, reducing in pitch quickly.

Starting from cold when im going to work is lovely, its like an eager puppy ready to go. I will really miss it. The 55 SC engine is the best engine I have ever ever experienced

If you get a CHIRP thats a problem though ! listen for it on slow speed pick up

Fuel pump priming, or something like that? No s/c here but I think I get the same noise.

The above is spot on, and BTW supercharger whine is louder when you crank up the boost!:D Awsome cars, I am actually in love with mine!
