Hello All.

I'm new here...I normally hang out with the audi-sport boys, as I run a nice little S3 as my weekend car.

I will soon be looking to replace my everyday car (an old Volve etstae that I'm waiting to die) with something. My immedite choice was an S8, but I'm starting to lean towards an E55 AMG.

Let's just assume I can find one...silver preferably, with less than £100k on the clock, looked after, no rust, no over heating issues, etc.

What type of work would I expect to be doing over the next couple of years of ownership? I would imagine it gets through tyres quickly? Suspension? Brakes?

I would be looking at getting a specialist to look after it. I'm in MK and I think there is one local.

Any tips will be much appreciated.

Thanks.

Hi there and welcome. What model are you looking for and what`s your budgget?

Welcome. The 55 engines are faily reliable and shouldn't need any specific items at that mileage. The later E55 came with a supercharger which complicates things a little, but the weak spot there is easy to diagnose (intercooler pump).

Things to prepare yourself for are:

1. Spark plug change - there are 16 of them
2. Transmission fluid change - often owners don't bother as MB used to describe as sealed-for-life but should be done every 40,000 miles or so.

I'm assuming I will be spending between £5k and £10k, and will be keeping £5k for running costs.

I would also expect to go for one with a supercharger (the latter W210s?).

Cheers Bobby.

The w210 never had superchargers :)

Do some good research on W210 rust problems.

All W210s rust, and most do really badly.

It's not uncommon to find cars that have had replacement wings, bonnets, boots, doors etc and large amounts of paintwork.

Other than the rust problem there's not really a lot to worry about. They have their share of niggles like any cars do (LCD displays in the instrument cluster fail etc) and the E55 models have a few larger running costs (mainly brakes - front discs are £200 per side, pads £100), tyres, plugs x16 as mentioned by BD above.

I'd buy one - but be prepared that part of the reason why these cars are so cheap is that they rust terribly. Factor that into your inspection (be very thorough) and make sure the price reflects the condition :)

Other than this - great cars

My fault - I hadn't spotted the W210 in the title.

Sadly the W210 didn't come with a supercharger out of the box - only the later W211.

Other than the rust issues (which can be sorted with MB under warrenty) then they are strong cars, I had one and Loved it preffer them more than C32's becuase of the V8 sound :D

Use to get the window down just to hear the V8 kick down

354bhp, 530nm torque 0-62mph in 5.3secs and capable of 31mpg on the run.. what more do you want?:thumb:

Get the facelift model, not a fan of the prefacelift.

Facelift models had different bodykit, wing mirrors, steering wheel, some had COMAND, Some had Ortho seats etc

Have a look in my album, mine was facelift.

Your silver E55 is exactly the car I want.

So the easy way to spot a facelift is the indicators on the wing mirrors instead of the wings.

He sold that not long ago,to a member here and it was mint :thumb: but he has an E430 for sale if that`s any good :)

Not always, some people upgrade the pre-facelift mirrors themselves...

E55 amg

Hi, I have a 2001 W210 E55 AMG which I have owned for 4 weeks now and so far so good (touchwood), it is very quick and loud when you put the foot down and other times you can cruise with the revs on 1500 rpm and it's as quiest as a mouse!

I was also keen on silver to begin with till I saw my car in Black and it looked really slick as was freshly polished up, of course the silver car will be easier to keep clean though.

I think you will find it quite difficult to find a W210 model without any rust to be fair, mine has it on the wings but at least it's original and hasn't been resprayed etc - if in the future I want to change wings or get bodywork done I might consider it, for the moment i'm happy with the originality of the car.

I am also in MK, and get between 13-16mpg driving around town and have got it up to 28mpg on the motorway.

It's def not a car for the faint hearted, the performance is blinding and surprises me as the change from a cruiser to a racer is just crazy!

Good luck with your hunt and if you get one lookout for my black E55.
