Hi guys,

Another newbie question,

For a set of proper tyres (new continentals or pirellis), what's the going rate for a pair of fronts and a pair of backs on an e55?
There is a car I have seen and one of tyres on the front has had a big keening gouge which I would want to replace - do one, do the pair - right?
How much should I pay?
Cheers
Trev

I'd definitely replace both on one axle.

If you budget around £200/corner you'll be happy when you come in under that.

Contrary to popular belief. Camskill & vredsteins / falkens are a good bet. Should come in at around £660

I just replaced my 265-35 18's at the rear. The cheapest fitted price I could find locally for Conti SC3's was £174 each in East Kent. Michelin and Goodyear came in at £190. I was going to opt for Vredstein Sessantas at £145 but told they were on back order throughout the UK. I probably could have saved a few quid buying online, but after postage and paying to get them fitted it hardly seemed worth the hassle.

Thanks guys. Tyres for my m3 were a lot more money.... Suitably reassured I will press on in my pursuit of the illusive e55 with the options I want all working with low mileage in showroom condition and not very expensive ! I seem to be able to get two or three of those preferences but not all....update to follow...cheers Trev

Good luck with your search. I viewed three cars before buying the fourth. I was looking for a car with comprehensive history and focused on the mechanical and cosmetic condition of the vehicle. Many buyers look for the dream spec with all the options. The car I bought has no panoramic roof, distronic, keyless go or dynamic seats, but when I saw it I knew it was the one to buy. One of the criteria I used to judge the cars I viewed was the tyres. If they have budget tyres fitted, then they probably have skimped elsewhere on maintenance.

A good shout Vilius - I take tyres seriously in my search. The one I saw today had pilots on, but on was kerbed. I have now looked at 11 over the las 3 months. I am getting closer. I'll bet once I find the right car, I buy it then put it in my garage for winter!

Mine had sh*tty budgets on it but they were the same and had a lot of tread on them so my guess was they were put on to save cash before flogging it.

However, the service history was in order and it was running like a dream - and has only needed a ball joint in 2.5 years.

So only use tyres as a guide mixed in with other aspects.

Mine also has sod all options but then I don't get problems with them failing either - swings and roundabouts!

You can buy a set of part worn premium tyres with 3mm of tread for less than £150 fitted... I wouldn't judge a car on its tyres.

You rejected a car because one wheel had been kerbed? No wonder you have viewed 11 in 3 months:D
Even the most careful driver can accidentally kerb an alloy.

As above, if the tyres need replacing before selling a car, I wouldn't blame an owner for putting on a set of £600 Falkens instead of £900's worth of Michelin's. He sure isn't getting an extra £300 when he sells it.

Ha! Not rejected out of hand - just need to know the costs for haggling purposes....8-)

Also, they were all curbed badly - more of a concern was the gouged tyre..... My thoughts were that this wheel / tyre hit a curb HARD.

Wow... you are still hunting Tricky.

I managed to find a black E55 in the end... not fully loaded but have the main options i want... Keyless Go, electric boot, 04 plate, not one spot of bubble rust on the rear arches, some minor dents fixable via PDR, no sunroof (i don't actually like sunroof) and lucky it came with the upgraded cornering headlights

By the way - how is your car going? Any issues to report? Has it lived up to your expectations?

All good so far, only one minor error but I can live with it... I get the Battery Protection on the dash but its a common problem, Olly checked my car and all my convenience features work fine and my airmatic pump is all good.

I did notice air con issues when inspecting but I knew what was wrong, changed the duo valve myself and went to Olly for an air con re-gas.

When you check the air con system make sure the vents are not blowing hot air when on low temperature, it will mean the duo valve needs changing. Also if you hear a hissing sound when the air con is on and one side is blowing warm air then it will probably need a re-gas.

Monster speed :D

Take a trip to Germany in September. All summer tyres are discounted. Got 4 conti 5's 275/35/R18's. Cost me € 600 all in. Put them on back seat and took them home. Had a set of 4 fronts in garage. Winter tyres are cheaper in the spring as the tyre dealers are moving on winter stock (4 in garage). €500 for 4 conti 245/40/R18's for my winter rims. Worth a weekend away and the beer and fags in Belgium on the way back.

That's exactly what I did last week, was only just telling the guys at the last Bluewater meet could not believe how much cheaper they were

By the way stop in Luxembourg for ciggies cheaper than Belgium
