E63s W213 vs M3 F80

Happy new year all,

I was on a stretch of road in my e63s w213. My mate was beside me in his stock 2015 M3 F80 (425bhp/550nm), we both floored it at the same time while side by side and I wasn’t getting away as fast as I thought I would have.

I thought that the E would have gapped the M3 instantly by about 4-5 cars length. It was a rolling race about 25mph to about 90mph and while I was faster, he was still very much by my side.

If it was on a public highway it’s a pity you didn’t get caught by the local constabulary.
Idiots who drive like you’ve described really get under my skin.

Maybe the OP didn’t make the necessary Brrrummm Brrrummm engine noises with his mouth (like we did as children) to give the essential powwwwwwer.

According to the guru that is Youtube then you should be 1s quicker over the 1/4 mile , so either :

Your friends car isn`t stock.

You have a 220d with an eBay AMG badge

You were not really trying so as not to embarrass him.

You TC was holding you back on cold tarmac , which should have been more of an issue with the 2WD BM i would have thought.

The E was warm and so were the tyres, I was in race mode and car selected first gear and was ready to go. Had no wheel spin, running new P zero tyres and serviced 400 miles ago. The car feels extremely fast when driving normally but very shocked at why I didn’t obliterate the M3 like I imagined I would have.

Any ideas? (and none of the it’s the driver not the car stuff pls)

Thanks in advance, currently experiencing a massively hurt ego
Two thoughts:

1. Given that you really wanted to spank him, you really picked the wrong race, go from a standing start next time.

2. Which car do you think you would you need to be driving to put the same distance between “it” and your E63S AMG?

It was on a private road. Would never break the law.

Agree with first point.

I’d think maybe a R8 V10+, GTR, RS6?

I think the issue was that I was in race mode which kept me in first gear at about 4-5000rpm at 25mph, if it was in sports plus it may have selected second gear thus giving me more torque?

None of them will manage that, the RS6 is slower than your E63s and the GTR (Which was my previous car) is about the same. The R8 V10+ at least is quicker over that sprint but not by the same margin as yours over an M3. There are so many variables and after a point the straight line acceleration is diminishing returns.

my stock cls63s destroyed my mates m4 with pure turbos set up ...

On paper I totally agree with Graveworm, however in the real world all of the cars mentioned above could have the same performance results of the very same race you mentioned in your original post. If any driver of any similarly capable car get's a fraction of a jump on the accelerator pedal then the results will not match what you would expect to see. 25mph to 90mph in these cars is over in no time at all and I'm not sure you should expect to see 4-5 cars lengths of a difference in that time.

Did you try this more than once?
How long did this 'race' go on for, did you both ease off when you didn't see the expected outcome?

I would recommend you get on that private road again and give it another few goes. The first race should be from a stand still, this should ruin his confidence, then take it from there. If you still don't get the advantage you are expecting, then maybe have your car dyno'd or if you don't mind having an interior from the '90's then consider swapping your E63s with your mates M3.

We did it three times and each time the drag only lasted about 4-5 seconds before he let off the gas due to lack of faith in his car. I think you’re right in terms of hitting the gas pedal I think he may have kicked down before me and I may have ignored that fact because I was so confident that I’d win even if I gave him a head start (that idea worked out better in my mind)...

From standstill the E will eat up most cars no I have no concern about that, I’ll have to have a rematch once that private road becomes available again. Saying that it may not happen as I do not like to rag/race the cars as they are a thing of beauty and should be treated well.

What’s wrong with his car if he doesn’t have faith in it and has to back out of a race he’s started?

Also why would you start a race knowing you’ll need to kick down, rather than start in the right gear?

I’m contemplating selling it and getting an M5 if I’m honest. I wouldn’t remap as I’ve got 2yrs warranty lol

Without a doubt the 0-60 on E is brutal and not many will match that but on rolling race it was embarrassing

Embarrassing because a car was nearly as quick as your car?

I think you need to get some proper perspective on what is important and not base your self esteem around the abilities of a car.

Youtube/tv shows are littered with Car X vs Car Y contests with the anticipated winner not quite hitting the mark as the variables are way more than just bhp/torque/weight.

You can swap to another more powerful petrol car but would probably still get blown away by a Tesla so you might as well enjoy the AMG rather than go all Fast & Furious.

That's a good point actually... I've seen a few YT videos in past of cars compared with other similar cars and sometimes both cars win multiple times each in a series of drag races even though one should have been quicker every time.

Interestingly, I owned an F80 M3 and I had it remapped to circa 510bhp. My mate owned a 140i with a tuning box on it and we had a similar dabble to the one you describe. My M3 did pull away but only marginally when in a rolling start. I thought something was off with the remap as I thought I'd muller a tuned 140i. When I sold the car and took the remap off it I thought the M3 felt really really slow so I guess the remap was fine and the BHP figures don't mean that much from a rolling start? My car was a DCT in full sport plus mode.

Bit disappointed to hear you didn't smoke a standard F80. I am collecting a non-s E63 tomorrow so was hoping it would be a good step up on the M3. 1st post here, so hello in advance :).

Welcome to MBClub. I’m sure you’ll love your new car!

Cheers Guys, yeah I am excited to collect it now... pics to follow.

25-90 in less than 5 seconds - wow!
