I'm looking at a new radio... eBay has a plethora of single-DIN, motorized all in one units with a touchscreen.

To give you a rough idea, 7-inch flip-out motorised touch-screen, GPS, DVD/CD player, some have USB, memory card, built-in memory (to save/rip your CDs to so you don't need a CD changer, etc. Some even have a freeview receiver...

For £200-£300, on paper, these seem too good to be true... that said, I'm guessing the build quality is cr*p, the user interface un-useable, etc... that said, they appear to be running Windows CE (5.0 so old... but better than a homebrew thing...). The appear to copy the pioneer unit with an extra zero on the price tag...

BUT... I am just guessing... has anyone actually got one?

With ICE you get what you pay for,id say go for a reputable name, for head units my personal preference is alpine had to many to mention. If you can id recommend a double din touch screen

unfortunately, I'm stuck with a single DIN unit... there's no way I can fit anything as the car I'm planning to put it in has the climate control underneath and the rest of the buttons above... no extra space...

Sorry, not paying attention in class.. single DIN would be Kenwood or Alpine for me.

Is there no way to modify the dash panel itself? What car you putting it in?

Not without some serious work... given that it's a short-term car... I just don't think it's worth it...

I was looking for something I can pull out and transfer or sell in 6-12 months...

if youre not gonna keep the car then dont invest alot of money on the head unit so that when you get another car your gonna keep, youre not tied to working with what you have, but have the option to work with the space in the new car

Exactly my point - which is why I was tempted to try the £200 Chinese copy instead of the £2000 Pioneer unit ;)

I'm guessing that no-one has tried them so far... might take a gamble and see what happens... It's a UK seller... or I might see if I can go see him and try them before buying...

i had one in the c180...... it came with it.... PIECE OF CRAP

get a pioneer

I've got a Pioneer flip out, lovely bit of kit. Mine has a blue display on the main screen, the newer screens you can choose the colour to match your car. I think they do one for about 350.

much better than chinese junk

hang on - I recently purchased this from eBay and think its a pretty good buy if you want this sort of system on the cheap.

It came with the latest nav to go 'Igo' satnav, DVD/CD, digital TV, radio, bluetooth.

Its great. There are a few irritating design flaws, like the fact the satnav cuts the audio when it speaks, which is not a problem in itself but after its spoken it waits about 3 secs before the radio comes back on.... a bit annoying but not end of the world. other main thing is there is no button to quickly switch channels/stations, so you need to use the touchscreen all the time for that. It does have output/input for steering wheel buttons so i may retrofit these at some point to solve that.

Some pics of it fitted in my W124.... I wasnt going to post the pics yet as i havn't trimmed the area yet (as i had to change from single-din to double-din) and the final position of the unit is slightly lower than shown in the pics to allow it to sit flush with the rest of the trim, but thought it would help you in your decision.

I recommend it. yes its cheap as chips, chinese stuff - but what isnt made in China nowadays???

let me know if you need any other details before you purchase and i'll try and answer best i can.

satnav is full late 2009 version and i guess is a 'copy' but never mind. i did a bit of research before buying the unit and it appears some people have problems with the satnav stopping working because the files become corrupt on the memory card. So 1st thing I did when it arrived was back up the memory card in its "initial" state. Should sort that problem if it arrises in the future.

Satnav even has "text to speech" voice so it says street names to you, but unfortunatly that voice is US. it has a few normal UK voices to choose from too though and you can add more if you wanted.

I also got this particular design as it looks more OEM.... more of a match to COMAND with the way the buttons are. Only downside is the buttons are illuminated blue, but thats not too bad. I did consider taking it apart and trying to swap the bulbs over but i'm sure they are soldered LEDs for the buttons....

Looks good, SS, Looking forward to more pics and a bit of a howto.

Thank you.

Thanks Derek,
I am after a single DIN unit - but if yours is a "cheap chinese knockoff" it makes me feel better about buying a single-DIN one!

the single din ones as far as i could see run exactly the same software, so are identical.
