EGR valve problems

Hi,

Ive been having nightmare with my Sprinter van over the last six months.

Excessive billows of white smoke (especially at idle and on acceleration) and fumes in cab.

Problem comes and goes as it pleases

All injectors replaced at the Mercedes garage - problem persisted

DPF removed and re programmed - problem persisted

Van re programmed to 'stock' settings and problem persisted

On the verge of selling the van now, but want to try one last thing.

- Checking the EGR valve

My question is: Would a re mapped ECU (for economy performance, which it is currently set at) mess the EGR valve up?

Or would the potential problem with the EGR valve be a physical problem.

Van has been in for numerous services and oil changes (because of rising, contaminated oil level) at two different official Mercedes commercial garages. But we can NEVER find the cause of this smoke !

Im based in Midhurst, West Sussex. If there is anyone local who thinks they may be up for the task of figuring this out let me know I would love to hear from you! - before I put it in another garage and spend another fortune getting nowhere :(

Hi there,
Did you get anywhere with the issue?
I'm having exactly same problem with my S class
It smokes when ever it pleases , really bad diesel fumes smell etc
Had it at mercedes gatwick they couldn't find the fault
My next step will be to remove egr valve
In the beginning I though its only on warm up in cold temp but yesterday it did it after 100mile trip on hot engine
I'm loosing my mind with is!!!

Hey,

Ive just had my van back from my local independant garage today (as opposed to the official Mercedes garage, where ive always been going)

They took the EGR valve out and gave it a good clean, although they said it looked ok / was fairly clean with not alot of carbon on it that would cause it to stick.

Unfortunately, they said it was still smoking even after cleaning the EGR valve. Driving it home it was fine, but I know it will start up again soon.

They have a hunch that it could worn valve seal which is letting oil into the cylinders. It could explain why its fine when cruising down the motorway, but intermittently puffs out smoke on idle and acceleration.

Otherwise they say 'its a real mystery', especially as it otherwise runs fine, has no loss of power, fuel pressure levels correct, no faults on diagnostic checks.

Im tempted to throw some more money into it to get this valve seal changed. But it means taking the top half of the engine out to get to it which I imagine is going into mega bucks.

Does your S class missfire occasionally on acceleration at idle / puff out smoke on startup after it has been parked for a while?

Isn't white smoke oil being burnt? Over fueling usually means black smoke. Sure, you sometimes get a puff of black "smoke" out of the back, but often that can be just built up soot being ejected.

My old focus would give off some black smoke when the turbo wasn't working properly - causing it to over fuel. It'd also give black smoke when the EGR was dirty. I only ever had white smoke when my turbo failed and the car was indeed burning engine oil.

Scoob.

No my S class drives fine
Last Sunday I took egr out and cleaned it, on test run mpg got so much better but went bad again very quick. I will have new egr fitted saturday as everything points to it. My symptoms were very low mpg around 20 and like a sequence was smoking a lot (dpf was doing regen), also oil level risen as cause of overfueling and diesel got into engine. Way I figure it out egr was closed at all times and car was thinking its engine is still cold. Result after each time around 100 miles dpf was doing regen.
Fingers crossed I'm on a home run here
Will let you know

I hope my S is fixed
We found Turbo Boost Pressure sensor totally clogged up with carbon deposits. Cleaned all seems fine now. Before I did 190 miles on half the tank, today same miles on a 1/4 !!!!!!!
Fingers crossed

Hi all. Am new in here .
I have e350 (2011) I changed oil cooler and all gaskets because I had some bad oil leaks , leaks is stopped but now is Engine light coming up, I put in the computer and is showing egr valve fault. Can anyone help or have any idea please

Rising oil - is diesel getting in there?

Worn piston rings?

We checked everything with my mechanic and everything looks fine. Egr valve sometimes work and sometime doesn't but is clean completely . I drive for 10 minutes and engine light comes on and power goes. When I put in the computer the egr valve code shows up I clear the code and is fine only about 10 minutes

I did not fixed my S class in the end and gave it back to the dealership. We changed everything on it from egr, dpf, pressure sensors, the lot Usually risen oil is cause of leaking injectors but I had same symptom on S class once all above changed oil was ok so we eliminated faulty injectors. Unfortunately it seems you have opened a pandoras box like I did. Hopefully you'll get it sorted Also engine light and egr fault can be caused by faulty swirl motor-thats what cured fault with my S class in the begining
