Electric car depreciation

I acquired my car driving licence late in life - and went for an auto only licence. I had held motorcycle licence since my teens.

My view is that manual transmissions in cars were an anachronism by the early 2000s.

It's astonishing that anybody should think they are acceptable or normal in modern cars.
Yeh, but manual transmissions are for "REAL driver's" cars. Whatever the hell that means. 🙄

I still feel more in control of a manual.... and at a trackday there is no comparison.
And there you have the use case for a manual, where you either want to hang onto a gear because you know you will be changing down, or your reading of the track says 2nd at 40 out of the switchback will do fine. I’m convinced B road blasts are also better with a manual as it’s partly the sound 🤓. But for general A-B via C driving autos are fine, I’ve flappy paddles in two of mine but even then the gearbox won’t let you be an idiot.

The boss has just retired from being an ADI (Driving Instructor) and she said the same; people are learning later in life and most want to learn auto until they understand with a manual they can pick and choose either and car rentals are cheaper 🤓. The BMW Z4 is hers, and that’s Manual.

I do love driving manual cars.

But then, I also like changing spark plugs, and manually adjusting mechanical watches, among other things.

All are things of the past, soon to be confined to hobbies.

Another reason for me is cost....I have the skills to rebuild a manual box and/or fit a clutch and have done in the past on mine and other peoples cars and motorcycles......but an auto box is above me, not possessing the knowledge or tools.....and since I DIY all my car stuff (apart from paint and tyre balancing) paying for someone to fix it would hurt!...... obviously modern boxes are pretty reliable......although with more and more electronics they don't seem to be as reliable as they were....like everything else!!

I think it very much depends on the application and tech.

My E Class is perfect as an auto and I wouldn't have it any other way. Well, I wouldn't have it as a manual, anyway.

My Fiat 500 is perfect as a manual and I wouldn't change that either; well at least not for the version of auto box that Fiat offer (Dualogic).

Generally, I don't mind manuals in small, simple cheap city cars. It kind of suits their stripped back ethos and helps with their efficiency. If they are to be automated it needs to be some kind of dual clutch set up - the only type that behaves in similar way to a slusher but without the drive train losses.

The most technologically advanced cars in the world have only two pedals. Their drivers are the highest paid drivers in the world and not one of them will agree that a third pedal would improve their performance.
As for the 'control' argument - you are coasting into the corner between braking and throttle in a three pedal car. Zero control and time wasted.

If you mean F1....well they are not really an auto.....just a ultra fast changing clutch less manual that uses buttons and hydraulics to shift rather than a gear stick. They come with semi-automatic gearboxes which allow for quick gear shifts at high speeds during grand prix races. The semi-automatic gearbox is designed to use a combination of electronic auto and mechanical manual gearbox systems to change gears.

AIUI the F1 setups provide a clutch for moving off from a standing start. But are semi-automatic thereafter. If there was no manual clutch control then AIUI they would be counted as automatics if road cars.

Anyone remember this?

How come?
Guessing EV VED starts in April 2025 and so renewing in March 2024 will mean that it expires in March 2025c so you can renew again b vote the VED is introduced.

Manuals are more engaging because the human behind the wheel has more to do, and it reminds us old duffers of times gone by. A modern automated transmission is superior to a manual in all objective terms.
There is a pleasure in “engaging” with the choice of gears on a country road. Especially if the car is light and swift to accelerate.

In traffic, in town: not so much

Quite.... but he said 2026. ...

Think he means you won't have you pay Tax until March 2026 instead of March 2025, when EV Tax is introduced. It's a loophole that a lot of EV owners are exploiting on a couple of EV forum's, that I'm on. Great innit.
But you must tax your EV before the end of March, so not long left. 🙂👍

Yes, exactly this. Effectively pushes back the start of EV VED by a year

So I could sorn it for a couple of days and start to tax again in March 2025 to take advantage of an extra 12 months free?
