Electric car depreciation

So I could sorn it for a couple of days and start to tax again in March 2025 to take advantage of an extra 12 months free?
Yes, you could also do a six month VED in October. There is a risk that the loophole gets closed before then - the DVLA website already warns that you are taxing an already taxed car and don’t go ahead unless the DVLA have told you to.

Not sure you can now, think it's to late. March ends on Sunday, you would have had to have done it by this Sunday. But give it a go if you want. 🙁

It would be next year 🙂

Can't do it next year. Can't do it next month, it's now or never.
(I think) 🤔

The new VED on EVs newer than 2017 starts on 1st April 2025 so if 12 months is applied for any time in March 2025 the new VED won’t be payable for 12 months from then, effectively April 2026

Ah, by jove, think I've got it! 🙂

I really shouldn’t be allowed to take unaccompanied test drives because every time I do - and without exception - I end up buying the car, I can’t help myself…

…and this afternoon I wasn’t too far away from a FIAT dealer just as they were about to close, so I popped in and walked out with this track weapon.

It’s a FIAT Abarth 500e 795 Compezione Turismo Performance Pack facelift with Monza Record, Monte Carlo wheels with the very rare panoramic roof delete.

I’d never have believed it, but it’s even faster than the Mercedes-AMG ForFour Black Series Night Edition Premium Plus 125 Navi facelift Powered by Brabus.
Collected it last night and did a few journeys of different types, and many laps around a car park! It seems to have enthused my daughter to learn to drive so it has had the desired effect.

We managed 4.9 mi/kWh on the main leg home which was 23 miles in 36 minutes at an average speed of 39 mph. That was 20 miles of dual carriageway (50-60 mph) and 3 miles of B roads (30-40 mph).

It was gentle driving but no different to how I would have driven any other car on the same journey. Not et charged it - FIAT only provide a three-pin domestic charging cable so a Mode 3 cable is in order.

Been out and about in the 500e today and managed 5.6 mi/kWh, averaging 31 mpg over 9.6 miles, with three adults aboard. Very please so far.

Just back from Donington and with four adults aboard - and a boot full of gear - I managed an excellent 6.1 mi/kWh over 17 miles of country lanes. Very happy with that.

Experiment update in the 500e:

So last night I did a 51 mph round trip, four up, in the dark, with A/C in, with the heating, wipers, radio and full beam on throughout. I was “making progress” as briskly as conditions would allow.

It also included 10 minutes of waiting with the ignition - and therefore A/C, heating, radio and wipers on - which carried on consuming energy. I drove the car with zero compromise, without regard for efficiency.

Even so, I covered 51 miles in 1h 43m at an average speed of 30 mph, consuming 4.1 mi/kWh and 62% of the battery in the process, reducing from a full (100%) charge to 38% with 28 miles remaining.

That means that the theoretical but real world range was 89 miles - but let’s say 80 miles as you ideally wouldn’t want to run all the way down to zero miles - compared to 115 WLTP Combined range.

I suspect that’s as close to the worst conditions for an EV. In Summer we split our time between North Devon and Notth Midlands. I could do the that journey with two stops, even in the conditions last night.

It takes 4-8 hours depending upon traffic, and so two stops for say 45 minutes is to be expected anyway - as I’m not a super human - and so I reckon the travel time would be very similar in ICE or EV.

That’s travelling in the shortest range option of the one of the shortest range models. A larger car with a larger battery and therefore longer range could only do better than that, ie the option of a one stop or non-stop.

I couldn't figure out if he'd actually bought it in the traditional sense or was trying to roll over some sort of financing arrangement.

Like I said when he said he'd "make it clear" I was none the wiser.

What IS clear is that when the govt creates loads of tax breaks for buyers of new cars that don't apply on the s/h market then the value of those cars is going to fall off a cliff.

As I've said in the past, my wife would like an electric Fiat 500. But the list price new is so mental (twice the price of the equivalent petrol) that, even now, the s/h prices still have some way to go before I bother to look seriously.

If and when they get down to $10k-ish for a 5 year old example with a spec as high as the one she's got then fair enough.
Seems a sensible approach to me.

That'll be good for a laugh , I reckon every manufacturer will be struggling to sell enough EVs in 2024 let alone the following years as the EV required percentage increases year by year. Which idiot dreamed up that little rule, are they actually on the same planet as us mere mortals.
I don't think they are on the same planet.
The whole #NetZero by 2030 or 2035 is impossible whatever incentives or fines the government imposes.

It's far from impossible.... in fact it's pretty easy....way easier than changing the minds of those that think it isn't and think they have the right to go on living and producing carbon like they always have at least. Tbh I'm probably one of those!
Google it.....make all out leccy renewably, run everything we realistically can on it rather than carbon fuels and plant a crap load of trees every year for a many years to offset the fuel we do have to burn and we are most of the way there. Overly simplified of course..... but it can be done.... and without sending us back to the dark ages.

It’s astonishing how stupid folks are.

140 Nations are committed to Net Zero, on the advice of the World’s scientists, yet still the uninformed public don’t understand that the Net Zero ambition is targeted at 26 years time: the year 2050.

Not 6 years’ time

Who cares about “range?”

Is the 500e a better or worse car to drive than a much cheaper FIAT 500?

And would it be better to be in something bigger, like a MINI, Golf or C class - ICE or EV - to meet ALL your motoring mileage needs in a reduced CO2 way?

Who cares about “range?”
Lots of people do, but on the basis that most journeys rarely exceed 90 miles, i don’t need to think about range because I’m lucky enough to be able to charge at home.

In a very long journey i won’t worry too much either, because I’ll just stop to recharge at the most appropriate points on the journey. I tend to stop every couple of hours anyway.

Similar I’d say, but I probably prefer the 500e, although it’s been a few years since I drove a 500. Slightly bigger, slightly brisker, slightly quieter,, but it’s quite a lot more expensive,.

The 500e is too compromised to be an every-day every-purpose car for most families, and it definitely is for us. Blooming perfect for the majority of the journeys we do though, well those out of necessity rather than fun.
