Engine Bay

I've read somewhere that cleaning products containing silicone can contaminate air mass sensors. Any truth in this??

Not really, the MAF is sealed in the intake tube so you'd really need to squirt the dressing up there which you wouldn't under normal cleaning!

Silicone is an absolute dust magnet though, I'd recommend water based dressings as they stay cleaner longer and can be wiped clean if/when they get dusty. Cleaning is also a lot easier when required. :thumb:

I don't personally like the look that they give on the engine bay, and as you rightly point out they attract the dust. Plenty of valeters use them in this area though, and I know they travel to areas that they are not wanted. My painter hates the damn things! I'm looking for a bit more detail than "not really" though. Can they pass through an air filter, and will they actually contaminate a MAF??

303 is silicone free and water based (according to them).

Yep, 303 and Autoglym Vinyl Rubber Conditioner are silicone free and water based.

Highly doubt you'd be able to contaminate the MAF even if sprayed into the intake tubes though... Painters hate anything silicone based...

Your engine bay looks great :thumb:.

:-) "highly doubt". That sounds less convincing than "not really". I've sent back a faulty MAF, to be told it has been contaminated with silicones, most likely from cleaning products. BS or not is what I'd like to know.

Hi Guys,

Right, These engine bays were all finished off with aerospace 303 left on for a couple of days. Obviously i spend a long time with various brushes scrubing away with degreaser as well as my dry steaming machine.

Then Yesterday I took the towels of the Ferrari 458 Italia, open her up after some 303, wiped off excess, few other bits of wizardry and this was the outcome:

All completeted with lots of elbow grease and just 303 over 48 hours:)

Cheers

Mike

Wow, those engine pics are inspiring!

The engine bay is one bit of my C63 that Ive never cleaned...it does look shabbly, and I will give it a shot this weekend

So, this degreasing process......whats involved, and what products are best(and value for money!)....Im way past spending loads on detailing products...been there done that!

I know some people that hose down their engine bay with jet wash. I'm too scared to do it but it does blast all the settled dirt away quicker than other methods.
