Engine cuts when drive is selected

Anyone experienced this ?
My 1999 E430 starts and seems to run okay but when you put it in drive or reverse the engine immediately stops !

Its not a case of too low an idle setting as you can hold it on 2000 or 3000 rpm and select drive (a little scary) and it immediately cuts out.

I assume its a sensor failure that is telling the ECU to kill the engine but what one ?

Get the codes read, it sounds like a kill signal is being sent over the CAN from the gearbox controller.

Sounds similar to a problem that I had on my 420sl ....turned out to be a loose wire on the fuel pump .
