I put a wittar towbar on my W210 and after driving it I heard noises from the rear of the car. The exhaust tailpipe was banging off the bar and I drove it like this for 40 miles. There was enough meat on the towbar to grind off the offending piece. The trouble is now the engine diagnostic lamp is coming up on the dash all the time, could the vibration from the exhaust coused a sensor to malfunction or has anyone come accross this before?

Unlikely. Its probably a co-incidence unless a Llambda sensor has been disturbed at the front of the exhaust.

To cure the knocking towbar a new set of rubber mounts for the rear box normally sorts it. I would not have gound off the offending peice.

Should I get a code reader (any recommended?)to find out where the problem is or do I have to go to a stealership? Will I do any damage by continuing to drive with the light on? The piece I took off the towbar does not interfere with the integrity of the welds or the structure but I take your point, I should have gone for the new rubber.
