Engine Died After Service

at such low miles? are these made of straws. the evos overstressed turbos do not blow like that so early.

I have to agree. IF the turbo has blown a seal then it explains everything, the only reason to change the intercooler would be if there was a serious amount of debris in the cooler that just could not be flushed.
This sounds even more like it was run without oil and the turbo would likely be the first thing to fail. It could be coincidental but it sounds unlikely!

However - whilst you are not picking up the bill for this one and have no way proving that any other damage has occured you may as well just accept their story and let them sort it out

Faulty turbo seals are a known problem on this engine so I guess its possible. Seems strange you had no warning of this prior to the service tho?

I know this might sound a really wacky suggestion and I'll get my coat ready, but is it possible an apprentice overfilled the engine? I have seen someone quite literally keep pouring oil into the filler uintil they cannot add anymore?

Regards
John

I'll close the door on my way out :o :o

I don't know John there seems to be a lot of oil this and oil that,if the engine was overfilled it would give a warning that is simply impossible to miss and if the engine was not given enough it would again give a warning that would be impossible to miss.

I'm prepared to stick my neck out here and say this was not an oil issue since Russ has confirmed no oil warnings where shown.

They changed the air filter and now the Turbo's blown?

My guess would be that they accidentaly dropped some debris in the intake when they changed the air filter. Then it took out the blades of the turbo as soon as the debris got sucked in. From there on, debris from the damaged turbo would go into the intercooler requiring that to be replaced too.

One shouldn't be able to get debris of any size into the intake as it has a grill covering the MAF.

More likely is the car was left idling and the turbo seals gave way under no intake pressure and blew properly once engine oil presure and turbo boost pressure rose.

The only bit I can't quite understand was them thinking it was connected to the radiator.

Perhaps they were hoping it was the cheaper of two problems.

One would give a bubbling header tank, the other clouds of blue smoke from the exhaust.

Hi Dan,
You are the man and my money is on you.

I was told the hoses and intercooler were full of oil rather than debris, and the smoke trail started first time I tried to accelerate above 2000rpm, so that makes sense. Regarding the radiator, it was closing time when I collected it and they probably did not give it a proper look until the next day as the head gasket scenario never seemed likely to me anyway.

Would you know what "full of oil" actually means for the hoses? Cannot have been literally full of oil. On the other hand, the intake is always oily from the engine breathing fed to the intake. My W210 even leaked a bit oil from the pipe (joints) before the turbo, before the pipe joints were fixed (car was new at that time). I assume some of this oil got in at a hard acceleration, there was quite a bit of smoke from the first kick-down from traffic lights if/when I had been driving smoothly at low rpms previously some time.

Will be interesting to follow the thread, I hope they get the car fixed properly and soon.

Maybe I could have worded that better, I meant full of oil as opposed to full of bits of the turbo blades/debris etc.

Funny that you should mention oil. Of course----- it must have all have come from the blown turbo seals. You should insist they check [under warranty] the exhaust catalytic converter+the EU4 particulate filter for emissions to make sure these havn't been partially blocked/contaminated. Otherwise come first MOT time- ???

Re-thinking this, maybe not. IF the engine oil was over filled then maybe some oil escaped through the breather into the intake.

It would have been interesting to see the intake before the turbo.

No particulate filter on my car, so one less thing to worry about. :)
