Engine knocking W211 E320

Having seen all the useful advice on this forum I wonder if anyone can help me.

I have an 04 E320 (petrol) with 72k miles, dealer serviced from new. It has recently developed a quiet knocking which is related to engine speed. This is only apparent at low revs when applying a little power - ease off and it disappears. When the engine reaches operating temperature the noise is almost imperceptable so when I take it to the dealership they can barely hear it and have suggested it could be a combustion noise. It is a slightly deeper note than a tappet clatter which I occasionally get for a moment on start-up. The car otherwise runs perfectly (oil consumption approx 1 litre /4500miles if long high speed runs are done).

Can anyone suggest how I might identify this irritating noise or if I can safely ignore it?

Thanks
Richard

1 litre /4500miles is alot isnt it? my CDI uses's hardly any!

How long you had the car? by the way welcome to MBclub;)

Richard - welcome to the forum! If the noise is only there when you're accelerating, it's possibly pinking. Try a different fuel, to see if that improves things (or makes it worse) and maybe get the dealer to check/change the anti-knock sensor. 1l/4500 miles does seem rather high for oil consumption.

Thanks for the advice so far. I have had the car since new and have tried a variety of fuels but not any "super" types. I guess that could tell me if it is pinking.
Richard

Run it on OPTIMAX for a while and see if it improves.

Hiya, I have read your post with interest as my E 320 petrol has developed the same problem for the four month. I will be grateful to know how you have resolved the knocking in your engine, keeping in mind I am using v-power petrol and I am still hearing the knocking when the engine is cold. My car has 56,000 miles on the clock from new. Cheers Ahmed

That's a lot of oil usage, my old W211 diesel hardly used a drop between services.
