Having seen all the useful advice on this forum I wonder if anyone can help me.
I have an 04 E320 (petrol) with 72k miles, dealer serviced from new. It has recently developed a quiet knocking which is related to engine speed. This is only apparent at low revs when applying a little power - ease off and it disappears. When the engine reaches operating temperature the noise is almost imperceptable so when I take it to the dealership they can barely hear it and have suggested it could be a combustion noise. It is a slightly deeper note than a tappet clatter which I occasionally get for a moment on start-up. The car otherwise runs perfectly (oil consumption approx 1 litre /4500miles if long high speed runs are done).
Can anyone suggest how I might identify this irritating noise or if I can safely ignore it?
Thanks
Richard
