Engine oil dipstick

Hi all.sorry if this question has been asked many times.Where can i buy,at a resonable price,a Engine oil dipstick for my c270 cdi ? I dont have a lot of faith in the on board computer.
When i changed oil 4 months ago, i added 5L witch is 1.5L short.I did oil check & it said "engine oil level ok" i topped up to 6.5L & done about 3k miles with no problem.
No search results after doing one on ebay.
Inchape wanted over £50.+vat.

I've asked MB the same question. They said I could buy the tool they use [expensive] which is graded for all vehicles but there is no dip stick for the cars with electronic readers. You could make one as suggested on this forum but how accurate it would be???

I hope it would be more accurate than my onboard computer! Im tempted to use my atf dipstick, and after changing oil&filter next time fill with 5.5L put a mark on dipstick, then add 1L (to 6.5 max capacity)&mark this reading on atf stick.
Any other members got any other surgestions
I would buy the proper dipstick from mb,but the cost is a bit expensive.

I have no doubt in my mind that you've overfilled it.

My W124 is supposed to take 11 litres from empty and when I could only get 9 litres in I queried it and was told that the oil cooler and associated pipework held the rest. A full oil change would require the removal of the pipe on the cooler.

I don't know the vehicle specifically but I would hazard a guess at it being a turbo diesel that it runs an oil cooler?

Dave!

Yes it has a oil cooler.I guess looking at the size of it there could be around 0.5 to 1L of oil in it & the two hoses from the filter housing.
Has anyone out there drained the oil cooler on a 270 CDI W203 and know how much oil came out? Next time i change oil&filter i will add around 4.5L idel engine for a few mins then do a oil level check with the on board computer

You should be concerned if your car is overfilled by between 1 and 2 litres - a diesel can start to run on its own engine oil in some cases - and you really dont want to do that - you will regret not buying the dipstick then.

Surely if it's over-full the display will indicate suce. why not pop intot eh dealer and have them dip it to be sure, then you can make your stick.;)

I changed the oil&filter yesterday.I refilled with 4.5L of oil.ran engine for 5 mins then did a oil check(after waiting 5 mins). The dash display said"add 1.5L of oil" which i did,to take total oil added to 6L.which is only 0.5L short of the capacity quoted in the mb handbook.I soppose the missing 0.5L must be in the oil cooler and the associated pipework connecting to it.

Hi This may sound silly but where does the dipstick go if i get one i was looking at the tube with the red cap on towards the back of the engine or is the auto trans dipstick.

No it's not silly. Where does the engine oil dipstick go since the red cap at the back is indeed the ATF hole?

I was also concerned with this in my W211, however a mate of mine (MB main dealer technician) told me that they have never had a problem with the electronic oil readings. You can buy a dipstick from MB. It fits in the hole that is sealed with a plastic cap. You must break this off as they do in the main dealers. They replace with a new cap each time.

On mine that is the cap for the transmission dipstick tube!

Engine dipstick tube just has a red pull off cap and on an OM648 engine at least is concealed by one of the engine covers. And although your mate may not have experienced a duff oil level sensor, I have!

Ah... so possibly a concealed cap under my W209 CLK engine cover.
