Im getting a PO 410 code popping up on code reader . After clearing code it stays off for about 200mile but comes back on. It relates to secondary air intake !
My car is the E55 W211 on a 2003
Any ideas ........car runs fine even with code present .

I take it the engine light is coming on?

If so I suspect the seondry air injection pump is faulty. A test on a Star is what is needed.

Yeah thats correct management light on dash and my code reader say's .....my mistake "secondary air injection system malfunction"
Could it not be a relay ? ......car starts and runs fine even with light on .
Dont want to replace the most expensive part ie pump first without trying other simpler causes , when it could be just a faulty relay .

Why replace any part, cheap or otherwise, if it isn't faulty?

As BlackC55 (and he knows about these things ;)) says, put it on a STAR first.

I agree but something is throwing up this fault every now and then .I'd really like to sort it myself ( process of elimination ) and dont have access to Star , but if need be I suppose I'll have to bite the bullet and take it up the rear

A good independent MB specialist will be a much better bet, and cheaper too, than a dealer for the STAR diagnosis.

This search shows a few in your area.

UPDATE - Changed relay for new and removed and cleaned (Dont know what it is called)but it sits at the back of the supercharger were the air intakes go !!.
Then had a remap done and garage said it was still showing PO410 and had to clear it again . They seemed to think wiring ....anyone got anymore thoughts ????

get it on a star to check mate, no point 2nd guessing.

Hiya Mate , 1 of the guys has sent us a useful link of fault codes which seem to point to the air pump. I might have to bite the bullet and get it on star if its as good as peeps say ! Acid mentioned to me that he has the same fault but he is not worried about it

its most probably the secondry air injection system that serves absolutely no purpose, so nothing to worry about just a stupid error but an error all the same.

you could replace with a 2nd hand unit , seen a few on ebay

Alps are you serious about the comment on the purpose of sec air system? dont go near a car to repair it :) you butcher

i had the same error and researched the subject well, sec air inj is an emmisions control item to get it past regulations. its not something to worry too much about.

like i said to the OP "get it on STAR"

im no master tech, but i know the w211 pretty well now.

Bite the bullet???

A star reading will cost around £40? from an indie hardly very much, if that were fuel it would get you around 100 miles !!

Get it sorted or it could be big bills.

PS, I had a short report on mine through star last time it was in and my indy charged £12, I have a print out 5 pages long with all sorts of tests and things. Most of it means nothing to me.

sec air system is important whatever you found about it. trust me

mine was caused by the flap malfunction. I have reworked the panel with new carbon resistive layer. no expensive bills ;)

£90 is what MB want to charge just for plugging it into star thats all I ment . I will check what my local indi will charge :)

It gets better .......not only do I have this on going problem , I now have Brake Service Visit workshop !!!!
My MB mechanic friend has checked it and found its the SBC unit which has expired .......EXPENSIVE but he has reassured me that Mercedes will replace under warranty !!
The part has been ordered just waiting for a call to take it down .

Has anyone had the same issue apparently it only effects early E class w211 and SL's

Most times Mercedes will cover the cost, you really do need to get a good local Indie it will save you a fortune.

I dont feel Im having the best start with this car LOL .....dont get me wrong I do have a good indi just it's because my friend works for them he does all the work for mates rates LOL just he carnt use the garage only at mine , but I agree if we come to a dead end he'll book it in to his place . But for now Mercedes needs to replace this bloody SBC unit thingy which apparently has only 2 million presses of the brake pedal and its out of parameters ( how true this is I dont know ) but there most be something or MB wouldnt be replacing at there cost
