Exchange Mail Service probs

I have a Dell server at work that wont download e-mails anymore. Everytime I go to the settings/services the Microsoft exchange Internet mail service has stopped and I have to manually start the thing again and then after 10mins it stops again.
I have asked some IT boys and they reckon the in-boxes on everyones pc's need to be emptied and then it will be ok.
It isn't of course so I wondered if anyone here has any advice.
 
check the sheduling of the service, and that there is no Domain or Group policy on service accounts (AD refreashes group policy, and will stop the service).
 
Quick question...

What AV software is running on the exchange box and when was the last update.

Wouldn't be Mcafee would it?
 
Anything in the event logs - worth putting logging up to max, to get an idea of what is wrong ?

Are your message queues backlogged - is there a message blocking them ?
