Not that I need one yet, but I am interested in the typical life span of a Mercedes exhaust system on a C class, or other model.. Milage / year of car etc. How long is it expected to last ?

Anyone ever had to purchase one recently or in the past ? I bet that this will bust the bank.

Not a V6 but my old 2000/V C200 Sport was going strong at 110k when I sold it, also my current 2001/X E200k is going strong at 120K :)

Exhaust life will depend on the type of running you do. The killer is short journeys when lots of water vapour is produced but partly condenses in the cold exhaust shortening its life. In FAVOURABLE conditions factory fit exhausts are good for 100k+ miles. Any replacement, even from Mercedes wont last as long as the factory fitted one. I have had good service from OEM type replacement exhausts Erberspacher or HJS/ERNST from EUROCARPARTS in the past. The part/s to worry about costs are the catalytic converters rather than the exhausts. Fortunately barring poisoning from bad fuel, poor fuel mixture control, or direct physical damage they seem to last a long time.:) not sure about the latest models tho.

Mercedes exhausts last for ages, far longer than replacement parts.

Stainless?

Hi All

Are stainless exhaust systems a standard fitment to Mercedes ... or a luxury option?

I know that Mercedes exhaust systems last a long time and I thought mine had failed last week after 8 years (120kmiles) but it was the clamp holding the exhaust system to the manifold, it had rusted through. Replacement was easy but I was surprised to learn from my indie that my Merc' had a stainless steel exhaust. I thought it was armoured and good for at least 10 years. My indie said, barring cat' failure, its life is far longer than that.

Is stainless steel the standard choice for Mercedes?

Not on my car and other 300TD I've known. They all rot leading into the backbox and the pipes. The Bosal replacement rear section is in far better shape after the same period on the car.

Generally the section leading to the Cat is stainless, the rest is alumised mild steel.
