As anyone thats driven a V12 will know that the exhaust tone is quite muted. I have been exploring the possibility of upgrading the rear exhaut box to something sportier. I would like an original AMG but the cost of this is near the £1000 mark, something i would rather not want to do. The other option was to have one fabricated by a custom stainless steel exhaust centre. I had a quote done for a double exhaust at £300, or a quad at £425 all fitted ( i know the manager of Longlife exhausts hence discounted rate)

What do you reckon? An original AMG exhaust, a fabricated twin exhaust or a twin twin exhaust? I would go for an oval design, not the rectangular oval design as in the picture.

Quad exhaust can be seen by scrolling down on the pdf file below:

Have custom one fabricated that looks like the standard double AMG. You can have the bore slighly larger like those on the current CLK55 for example (blooming massive!). It will sound as you specify and all you will be missing is the AMG emblems on the top.

What i was thinking about was buying an AMG box of ebay which goes for under £100, having the tailpipes cut off and welded on a Stainless steel box..... but for another £125 another exhaust on the other side seemed tempting but was not sure about doing it to a SL!

No, keep it at a twin IMO. Although if anyone could justify a quad exhaust it's someone with a V12 under the bonnet.

a quad would not look right unless you have the lower rear valance designed for a quad too, which the R129 never was. I would stick with the twin, AMG original

How will your modified exhaust effect the performance compared to the correct parts.

I am hoping you will say none at all because the stainless steel seems the way to go.

I will not vote though until I hear your response.

I doubt the stainless steel exhaust will give any performance advantage. If you wanted a sports sound from the exhaust then yes, as they simply use a box with less mufflers. But i would like a mild-sport as i don't want it to be booming.

I've looked into a similar thing for my SL500 - I wouldn't use Longlife based on what I have seen at a branch. You can buy the AMG tail pipes seperately:

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=4556112201&rd=1&sspagename=STRK:MEDW:IT&rd=1

I would try Haywood & Scott for the fabrication:

Would be interested to hear how you get on with this.

I saw the tip on ebay but its only one, and i needed 2. What branch did you use? I have used them before, incluiding a 500SL and the Brabus i owned and i could not fault them. The joy about using them is the fact they are cheap. For anything more expensive i'll shell out on an AMG.

You have a V12 Mercedes - I doubt the cost would worry you! Haywood and Scott quoted me (roughly) £300 but wanted the car for 2 days - Quicksilver in Guildford wanted £600 and it for a week. I went to the Carshalton branch of Longlife where all the work was done by one 17 year old surrounded by his mates Barry Boy Novas etc - just put me off.

You'll get a slight BHP increase with a new exhaust as it will have less back pressure - I've even read that the original (on mine) exhaust, whilst very well made - the design means that it creates a backup of heat (14 baffles) and can cause premature failure and even cat damage.

Another thing is that i don't really want to lose the car for 2 days either, especially as none of them are local to me so will involve alot of hassle getting back from there and picking the car up. The AMG exhaust could be fitted straight away by ELITE in Rainham, but takes 3 weeks to order in. To be honest the only thing that concerns me with custom exhausts is the fact they can tend to be boomy as they are not specific for your car.

I hate to say this, but you are answering your own question. ;) Could you live with an exhaust that made a noise that irratated you?

My vote is going for the AMG.

Your car deserves the best.

I say custom single twin exhaust with AMG tips. Quads would look odd IMHO...

I voted leave it as it is, It was made that way for a reason, why change?

So were your pedals, light clusters, wheels. Hello!

KLP , before you think of putting quad exhaust, kindly squad down and see whether there is any space on the right ? there is none , the only way for 4 exhaust is have the right side come out of a pipe from the original left box.

i used to own a R129 wth quad muffler :>
