Just been offered a years extended warranty for my R230 by my dealer stating that it is a slightly better warranty than the MB Tier 1 as it covers extra items like the Cat - up to 70,000 miles. Now I've not yet read the small print but the offer is £650 - that's about 6 hours labour at todays costs. Does it sound like a good deal to you guys? I have had a few niggles with the car and it's been in a few times too many, so I'm thinking this might be a worthwhile insurance policy. Thoughts? Thanks, Matt

Sounds good to me, I am not aware that the CAT is not covered by mercedes tier 1 warranty or is it covered but milage limited?

Fantastic price, but please read the small prints.

I would be very surprised if Tier 1 didn't cover cats. When I had it on my used R129 it even covered punctures! Seemed more comprehensive than the new car warranty.

I'm going to pick up the details this afternoon and consider it over the weekend. I'll compare the current warranty conditions with the new one and let you know the major differences.

Seems the salesman was quite a bit wrong about the warranty. I've just spoken to the service team and they told me their warranty is no way near as good as the MB one. Not surprising as the MB one is £1450 and their's is £650. Guess you get what you pay for.

The dealership warranty has lots of limitations including no cover for any TV or telephone systems including COMAND. This was one of the items I used as an example and he said it would be a poor compromise for the SL as the SL has parts that their warranty wouldn't recognise. I'm not in a position to shell out £1450 for another year so I'm thinking of not extending and using indies for anything other than servicing. I'll still have a good look at the small print, but at the moment it's looking unlikely that it's good value for money.

My R230 SL500 has just failed it's MOT on 2 x leaking rear hydropneumatic units at £817 each. Plus VAT. Plus £300 labour. Plus VAT.

A month ago the front suspension drop-links went at £600.

Two months ago the central locking pump went at £234.

Moral of the story? - don't buy a SL:D

Sorry, I meant that all the above was covered by the warranty that I purchased last year for £1,395:rock:

PS It's only done 36,000 miles:crazy:

Hi Matt - Mercedes Liverpool do 1 year at £499 2 years at £699 through Inchcape. Excluded is sat nav, tv etc and exhaust items, also wear and tear, but most other things seem to be included. Getting my CL 500 examined on wednesday to see if it qualifies (they need to examine everything for pre-existing faults)
