hello

i hv a faulty fuel gauge on my w210 e230 1996 model. i've done resistance simulation based on STAR diagnostics resistance ranges as well as using a brand new fuel level sender...pretty much confirmed its the gauge that's faulty.

the problem is intermittent...overstating the actual fuel level in the tank and for now, been managing it using trip meter. getting a used instrument cluster costs a bomb here in malaysia, half the cost of a new unit, which is a lot of money to fix this inconvenience.

is the fuel gauge repairable, saving the need to replace the whole unit? since problem is intermittent, i suspect its electrical connectivity problem.

appreciate all help from you guys.

cheers

Welcome

This is a known fault on this model. The sender connections get corroded and give faulty readings. There is a modified version which are now available and fitted by MB. See many threads on this subject by searching.

thanks Brian. done that & mostly what i found was that the fuel level sender unit was the culprit. i've bought a new sender unit & put it in & still the gauge is showing wrong fuel level.

actually, the fuel gauge doesnt want to go below 3 quarter level. thru the STAR diagnostics, the gauge was checked & didnt show it was stuck, cos it can go from full to empty & vice versa.

cheers

I had the same problem with my fuel gauge, but now as I use LPG it does not tend to move much :)

hello blicky

that's not a feasible option for me in malaysia as LPG or CNG still at infancy although we are a major natural gas producer in this region. for now, confined to city cabs...the distribution network just not there except in major cities.

although i've joined this forum for a while now, i've not been an active poster since i surf the UK MB forums for reference only, for which i'm grateful of their existence. a lot of MB cars here in malaysia originated from UK. mine was from Alan Day, for example.

merc owners activism is still at infancy stage in malaysia and i'm a moderator at mybenz.org, the malaysian forum for merc owners. whatever i learnt from here, i'll share the knowledge with other local members.

cheers
