- C180 AMG Sport Plus
So, passed the first 1000 miles with my C-Class AMG Sport Plus, and have been comparing it to 3-series trade in.
Pros
Pros
- Car looks fantastic, far superior to the new 3 series
- Ride comfort far superior, tight but not rough. Just perfect going over speed cushions.
- Lighting, bi-xenon headlamps are tremendous, never had the road light up infront of me like this before, and the throw is really far into the nearside too.
- Engine is sweet. Very smooth for a 1.6 litre, and rock solid 600rpm idle. I've been driving the first 1000 for economy, so not really pushed it hard (much), but I can tell it has more grunt than the 2 litre BMW, which is handy. Time to 30mph is very swift thanks to the ....
- .... Auto box is magic. I have noticed a slight "grab" coming down to second gear, but only for the first few miles on a cold morning. Apart from that this is an amazing box, you really have to concentrate if you want to feel it moving up or down the gears, it is really extremely smooth.
- Fuel Economy. Yes, it can return 38 mpg cruising on the motorway, but it's not as economical as the BMW on average. Two tanks of fuel, and both returned exactly 30.0 mpg. The BMW was a rock solid 33mpg. To achieve 30mpg for a tank in the Merc I had to really pull out all the eco driving skills, the coasting and acceleration bars were maxed lol. Driving for pleasure, I fully expect the economy to drop well below 30mpg, disapointing for a modern saloon, but it's not going to spoil the enjoyment.
- Breakdown. Car broke down with 60 miles on the clock, dodgy injector. One in a million chance and these things tend to happen to me, so I got over it heh.
- Creaky crackly dash. I've tracked it down to the hard plastic surround to the centre console, around the buttons. It's quite hard but thin, so as it heats up with the car, it expands and creaks. Merc should have used a different material. You can hear it a couple of times on every journey, but it might settle down, no big deal.
