Got the call today - £1700, not a low as I'd expected,

Will be having another look at autotrader tonight to see how that reflects similar cars (and probably going back to them with some examples - never accept the first offer as a matter of principle).

What do folks reckon - £1700 for a C240 sport, 154K, 4 good tyres, MB-tex.

Well, I guess they're going to start as low as they think they can get away with ! Suggest you counter it with something over £ 2k (maybe £2400) backed up by some actual ads of similar vehicles if poss. Maybe settle in between ? Good luck.
ps are you still going to consider buying back & private fix ?

Well valuer is refusing to budge over the phone - dont' actually want them to move far either!!

I would say £1700 was a fair offer given that it's a 12 year old car with 154K on the clock:)

That's why I'm not after much movement - currently with the necessary mileage adjustment I'd be trying to knock the average autotrader asking price for a '98 C240 Sport down by £250 to get to £1700 (and I'd like to think mine was in better than average condition - 4 very decent tyres and 12 months MOT to start with). £250 seems like a big haggle to me - £150 possibly. For what may just turn out to be £50 it may not be worth the hassle - then again if everyone thought like that that it all adds up.

When it comes down to it it's more than the notional value I have in my spreadsheet - but that's just purchase price depreciated by 3% a month, not very scientific.

Maybe do a deal with them to include salvage. They won't be after much for the car, and considering you know it has four new tyres and many other spares you could probably do quite well out of it.

Just a thought if you have the inclination/time/space etc :)

BTW, don't tell them :o but am I the only one who thinks that insurance offers for damaged cars seem to be better these days than a few years back?

I can think of several friends/acquaintances who have had cars damaged/written off and the offers seem to be fairer than they used to generally.

Don't have the latter two, and the first is lacking having picked the Alfa 156 up today. It's already very tidy, but will get a serious going over over the next few weeks.

Then I need to arrange a driveway widening excercise - SWMBO thinks it's because our son will be returning from University in the summer. I have longer term plans (MBs with 2 digit model numbers perhaps).
