For KillerHertz

Looks pretty decent, but think his heart's set on Black...

It is(was) very very tempting

This car is a part exchange high milage

What does it mean:

Part Exchange only???

No, I'd assume he means it's a car that someone else has part exchanged with him - not retail stock that he's sought out.

Quite high miles but at least it's starting at a sensible price :)

Yeah, will be able to get it checked out by my garage if im lucky... :)

Alot of car for the price, only downer is the mileage

Watch this space :) :)

Looks a nice car, and for that price, its got to be worth a look, good luck!

Sorry to be negative but probably new condenser needed!

Never had aircon before, so its not like Id miss it.

Ive been driving around all winter without any heat, then all summer with the heater stuck on hot!

How much is a new condenser, we talking £100's?

Got this back:

Hi Karl,
I am a vat registered Trader Ltd Co I work from home xxx just North of Cambridge. I used to be a General Manager for xxxx in Cambridge before starting my own business.
This car has been a company directors car I belive from Newmarket I took the car in part exchange against another Merc just younger.
As you can appreciate it is not imaculate by the very fact it has high milage with a little bit of tlc would look a stunning car there is no real rust as such, the wheels however are pickling up this can be done for approx £40.00 per wheel. There is loads of service history last few years specialists as apposed to main dealers this is normal. The car is stored at present so I haven't got the book in front of me. The car drives very well the sport models handle very well as well. The only thing that needs sorting is the air con needs re gasing.
As I am just selling as it is as it is a trade in you are getting a chance to buy at trade a very good value Merc.
Thanks for your intrest any thing else I can help with just e mail

Regards

mmm, never simple is it, still I think I will have a look and judge for myself

Have a look and see what you think.

The condenser itself is less than £200, I think I paid about £350 for condenser, receiver-drier, pipework, re-gassing and labour. You might want to build that into your budget if you're considering buying that car. Is the guy a trader? If so then he should also offer a warranty of some sort...

Speaking as a C230K owner, they are cracking cars, but I'm biased! Mileage is a bit of a downer though. Kickdown and the Kompressor 'whoosh' are more than adequate for my needs. It would need a mechanical inspection at an independent and a thorough test drive - don't forget to test the kickdown!
Les
You might wish to talk to the ex owner director and establish how the miles were added - maybe mostly on motorways

I drove a C200 (testdrive for MercedesBent) and I didn't realise how different the C230k engine sounds to a regular 4cyl! Totally different! :)

Looking at the email Killerhertz posted re the car it sounds as if this trader is intending to sell the car as a 'trade sale' i.e. no warranty. Many traders do offer 'trade sale cars'.

This also explains why he wrote Part Exchange Only. He's described that he took the car as a part-ex and wants to sell it as such. He therefore wouldn't intend to do any remedial or preparatory work on it nor offer a warranty.

Not a major issue if they're totally up-front about it and the price reflects this...

I'd still say, if you can get £2440 for a 1995 C180 (don't know how many miles, but didn't it need some work anyway - tappets etc?) then £1900 or there abouts for a C230, Kompressor, Facelift Sport model is good going IMO.

As Shude has pointed out, and I've re-iterated many times (it's a pet hate of mine!), there's probably more to the air-con fault than a simple re-gas. The condensor (it's like the 'radiator' for the air con, at the front of the car..) often rots away and leaks.

I've replaced it before on my old C230K - it's not that difficult but still something to budget for.

Anyway, online speculation can be good but it can't beat a proper look around in person - if it's local take a look and report back to us :)

Sounds worth a look, but take onboard what quite a few folks have said. Do NOT have blinkers on because it 'looks' nice.

This person is a car trader, his business is making money out of cars. If these repairs, improvements (call them what you want) were cheap, then this trader would do them and simply up the asking price.

I have visions of this person simply saying, 'There it is, I took it in part exchange, I'm selling it as is, and I am not offering any warranty, guarantee etc.'

Buying a replacement car is always a challenge, the hardest part is walking away from something that is not quite perfect. This car may tick all the boxes, but if all your boxes are not ticked.... WALK AWAY there are plenty of fish in the ocean.

Good luck with the choice,
John

Indeed my own car was bought with apparently no warranty, dispite being told that I was buying the car off the owner, NOT the dealer, having to write the cheque out to the company and getting an official receipt which claimed warranty in the fine print!

A friend of mine bought a car from a dealer and they said they would like to offer warranty and they are looking into it but presently were not able to. I think they might find that it's a legal requirement!

Called the guy up, he seems an alright bloke - told me he has a car dealership on Autotrader.

Reckons a few people have called him about it (maybe a lie - who knows) and would prefer to sell it to 'someone up the road'.

Arranged a test drive for Monday :)

Claims it has had a small dent in the front door which has been repaired, otherwise good condition - not showroom mind.

No warrenty on a car that age he said - does on his newer cars (Like an SL & CLK he claims to have in stock)

Watch this space then! :)

Don't be too skeptical of everyone Karl !!

He could be a nice guy really who is just looking to make a little cash , not everyone is out to rip everyone off all the time !!

If he thought there would be problems wit hthe car, it really wouldn't be in his best interests to sell it to someone local ....

Good luck with the viewing , i hope its the car you are looking for ..

H

Age has nothing to do with offering a warranty! If he's a dealer and you're a private individual he has to.
