Age has nothing to do with offering a warranty! If he's a dealer and you're a private individual he has to.

Really? I often see vehicles advertised as Trade Sale - No Warranty.

If it is explicitly mentioned is this supposed to be illegal?

Should you go to the local council trading standards department for this sort of thing?

We bought a car last year from a franchised dealer (SEAT) as a trade sale for my brother-in-law. They made it clear (I'm sure the invoice also stated this on their headed stationery too!). I checked it out at the time & the car was & has been faultless.

I think Stats is right, but what would happen, say (hypothetically I know) it was sold as 'spares or repairs' or scrap or something?

Just curious

Will

If it's a trade sale then it's supposed to be between two dealers - you can accept a trade sale but you'd be lying in the fact that you were a dealer. The vendor is supposed to confirm status of course ;).

Hes a trader which I understand handles cars between dealers?

He has a Ltd company which he claims to be VAT registered.

Of course I can discover if its all dodgy when I view the car, Dont worry I wont buy on sight - I intend on going through the car with a fine tooth-comb which normally you cannot do if you have never had the same model before.

Got an insurance quote online £1400!!!

Called my brokers who said I could add it to my exisiting policy (runs out Nov) for £66.

After that about £800-£900 as I now have no-no claims :(

Still, better than £1400!

How much would it be to insure your previous car? I doubt the difference is huge.

His ebay feedback is 100% but only on 9 items. This is also mainly from buying items. The older items aren't visible but one of the comments says 'happy with the car'.

I guess he mainly trades between traders and he's possibly trying Ebay as another outlet - especially as some cars can sell for over the odds on Ebay!!!

BTW the insurance quote you got isn't too bad. I bet you can't wait till you get to see the car on Monday :)

I think we can all worry ourselves into a frenzy, but it does pay to be aware of who your dealing with. The bottom line is all about you and your happiness. This car might be just what your after, but in the meantime simply keep looking.

Good luck,
John

Too right, if I do get it, I cant wait to give it a proper clean, & add a few simple mods - Euro new style font plates, bootlock cover, crome wheel centres.

As its a Sport, I *may* even buy some shiney pedals - shock!

John, I defintiely agree. We all possibly worry too much or may be too sceptical but it pays to be careful.

I always like to know who I'm dealing with and make sure any 'story' fits. Perhaps I'm too cynical, I always have lots of why... questions.

We've spoken about this before Karl ....

Chrome ...... ;)

Seems a good car. Just a petty about the miles but with a proper inspection could be a good buy.

Too old, and most likely wont have had a nice life

Cheers Though :)

:D I got rightly criticised for spelling sexist wrong, so here goes.......

Age-ist :D

I suppose you think anyone over 59 yrs old should be put up against the wall and shot?? (I just sneak in under that ;) ) Hopefully you realise I'm joking. Mercedes-Benz are a marque that matures with age, as the steel gets older it develops an immunity to the dreaded rust bug!!!

;) ;) I understand really where your coming from. Just noticed the time of your post.. Get to bed!!!!

Good luck with your choice,
John the sleepless

I had just got in from a 19 hour day

Just spoke to the guy :(

Its got a problem and he has removed it from eBay, he says its 'running lumpy' and it is booked in tomorrow.

He will let me know what is causing it.

So, unless its something small the search continues
