I have a brand new, genuine MB part timing chain for a 190E 2.3-16.

This will not fit the 2.5, or any other model for that matter - only the 2.3 models with the 102.983 engines.

This is an item that should be replaced at 60,000 mile intervals!

I had this on ebay, but took it off as there is no point in me selling it for 0.99p!

If anybody wants it for £10 they are more than welcome (it is brand new, and cost me over £40!)

Link to the original ebay listing: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=2487753558&ssPageName=STRK:MEUS:IT

Cheers,

Will :)

I always thought the point of a chain rather than a belt was that you didn't have to change it.

It is well documented that earlier MB engines utilising the single link timing chains suffer from excessive wear, leading to wear on the other components, and ultimately, failure.

If you fancy the sight of rebuilding a cosworth 16-valve engine when the timing chain either snaps, or jumps a tooth, then go ahead!

If not, and in accordance with the factory servicing schedule, I believe that it would be prudent to change this item on time. You can change this with the engine and head etc in situ, by removing the tensioner assembly. This being one of the single, most important preventative measures you could take with this engine.

After all, the 102.983 engine is in a higher state of tune, and complete with its 7,000 RPM redline, puts a higher state of stress on components such as this.

Ask anybody who has had a timing chain/belt snap or slip on them if they feel that it would be worth skipping this procedure! ;)

Will

Thanks for that - I didn't know. Tell me this, I have an '89 2.5-16 with 75K & a very FSH (oil every 3,000 etc). Do I need to do the chain (duplex, isn't it) on that or did they solve the prob. in the later engine?

Later 2.5 Engines had this problem largely resolved using the duplex style chain and a revised tensioner design.
Unless yours is noisy or found to be worn then I would leave it.

Incidently, how often do you have the top end set up?

Cheers,

Will

How often do you have the valve clearances etc adjusted? I think they are supposed to be checked at least every 12k miles :)

They use solid lifters, and you will need to use shims to set the clearances.

HTH,

Will

It's been serviced by Andy Gayle for the last 3 years. I've never asked them to do that but I'm guessing they'd do it as & when. God knows they see the car often enough.

I think you should be fine, Andy Gayle is a very well respected specialist. Although it wouldn't hurt to check that this is done on your next major service?

Cheers,

Will

bttt :D
